Happy New Year!

News from Our Branch

by Kerri Moore, Branch Supervisor

We were pleased to have Nicol Huntington join our staff in November.  Nicol is the branch’s first ever Library Technology Assistant.  She has jumped into the assignment with both feet, talking to a crowd of more than fifty job seekers at the Sacramento One Stop Career Center Hillsdale about job resources available at the library her first week on the job.  Nicol will also be offering a six-session, hands-on Introduction to Computers course at the branch beginning January 17.  Registration is required and can be done at the library, online at www.saclibrary.org, or by calling 916-264-2920.

We will be celebrating Black History Month in a big way this February!

Get on the Bus: the story of Rosa Parks features Angela James sharing a living history through vignettes of the day for school age children at 4 pm on Thursday, February 13.

Sister Sheba shows teens how to twist, bend, weave and wrap wire to create wearable art. All Wrapped Up: An Introduction to Wire Wrapped Jewelry is scheduled at 4 pm on Wednesday, February 26.

Adults can explore the history of Sacramento’s Black owned restaurants, including a cooking demonstration and tasting at the ArtWorks program Soul Food, Barbecue, Jazz and Haute Cuisine at 2 pm on Saturday, February 8.

Mark Your Calendars for NH-A Friends “What’s Your Interest in PinterestWorkshop

Following on the heels of our fun and informative “Paper Crafting with Angela” class in December, the NH-A Friends will be holding a workshop offering basic instruction into the social networking site, Pinterest. Our Pinterest guide, Stefanie Buckmaster, will explain what Pinterest is all about, and how to use it. Pinterest is a tool for collecting and organizing things - recipes, crafts, fashion, professional strategies, new places to visit, whatever interests you. The breadth of information shared is astonishing.

Stefanie will demystify “boards” and “pins,” cover the broad array of topics that others have created, and show you how to tailor Pinterest to best meet your own interests. Don’t miss this chance for a guided tour, Tuesday, February 11 at 6:30 pm at the North Highlands-Antelope library community room. A $5 donation is requested. Contact NHAntelope.Friends@gmail.com for more information or to reserve a space.  And share the info with your friends!

NH-Antelope Friends 1st Quarter Meeting Set

The North Highlands-Antelope affiliate will be holding its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, starting at 11:00 am, along with a potluck lunch. We will hear from Kerri Moore about the diverse number of adult programs that will be held at the branch, as well as from Denise Lee and Justin Azevedo, who will describe children and teen programming on tap for the first quarter.

We will consider budget requests to meet our library’s needs during the first half of the year. Annual election of officers will be held at this meeting. The current Board members will be nominated to serve an additional term, although nominations from the floor will also be welcomed.

Planning for the first major book sale of the year, in April, will begin and discussion of whether to continue the mini book sales will be up for discussion.

We will have a potluck lunch during the meeting, with entrée provided, and Friends invited to bring a side dish or dessert.

Paper Crafting Class with Angela Fun for All

A big thanks to Angela Brown for her fantastic paper crafting class in December. Angie created two templates for holiday gift tags and cards, provided all the supplies and gave us step by step instruction to creating our own little paper masterpieces. All the participants left with beautiful, unique tags and cards, along with a newfound confidence to create our next holiday tag.

All the participants agreed that this class was great fun, and informative. And everyone fell in love with Angie’s paper embossing machine! We hope we can convince Angie to come back and do a second class!

November-December

Welcome to our new branch supervisor, Kerri Moore!

News from Our Branch

By Kerri Moore, Branch Supervisor

Getting to Know You
It’s been a little over a month since I joined the NH-Antelope staff. What a whirlwind! Having spent seven years as the manager of the Arden-Dimick Branch, I am accustomed to being in a busy branch, one loved by the community and supported by wonderful Friends. Well guess what? I’m experiencing déjà vu!  I am amazed by the number of new library cards we issue every day, the enthusiastic teens attending library programs, the volunteers willing to give their time to help patrons search for jobs and do their homework, the great turnout for an inaugural spelling bee and so much more. Thank you for welcoming me to your library, and please be sure to look around the branch to see what programs and activities are coming your way the next few months.

Volunteers Needed!

Do you love books? Have an hour or so a week to work in the library? If so, we are still in need of a couple of additional book sorters.

Consider donating your time and talents to help us keep the rounds (by the entry doors) and shelves (along the community room wall) filled each week. The Friends typically receive several boxes of new book and magazine donations each week.

Rotating stock so that older books are sent to the bargain shelves or off to the Book Den allows us to manage our limited storage effectively.

Angie will be happy to provide training, tips and advice to our new volunteers, so don’t be shy.

Getting “saleable” books displayed helps our bottom line. A fresh supply of books means more dollars each month that can be spent for programs and materials for our branch.

First NH-A Spelling Bee, Fun for All

The first spelling bee sponsored by the NH-Antelope affiliate of Friends of the Sacramento Public Library and the Foothill-Highlands Rotary took place  Saturday, October 5.

We had 19 students sign up, which was very impressive for a first effort.

Thanks to the Foothill-Highlands Rotary for sponsoring a Kindle to present to our winner, Ethan Calvo. Samira Archer placed second and Jude Smith placed third.

Kudos to Doris Vermillion, who made this first spelling bee such a success and to Michelle Weeks, who helped us reach out to many of the schools in our community to invite student participation.

Thanks also to our judges and word caller: Karen Davies, Marilee Monagan with Rotary, Terry Chekon, Samantha Oliver and Joy Skalbeck

Holiday Paper Crafting with Angie

We have a brand new and fun program for Friends of the Library and the community at large coming up on Saturday, November 9.  Angela Brown, our current book sale chair and expert crafter will be demonstrating paper crafting project for the holidays. No need to pre-register, just come by the library on Nov. 9th at 11 am. This workshop will be held in the community room.

Angie will be demonstrating holiday greeting cards and gift tags. No need for previous experience, Angie will help crafters, the beginners as well as experts, as we create our own holiday projects.

A $5 donation is requested, but paper, stamps, glue sticks and embellishments will be provided. Crafters are asked to bring their own pencil, ruler and scissors.

And mark your calendars now for our next adult program – “What’s Your Interest in Pinterest?”

This will be an evening program, Tuesday, February 11, 2014 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. sponsored by NH-A Friends.

Stefanie Buckmaster will be your guide to “pinning,” and using Pinterest as both a source of inspiration and an easy way to save and share all the good ideas you come across on the Internet. Pinterest  covers a wide variety of topics including architecture, DIY and crafts, gardening, cooking, history, science, wedding planning, films, books and music, health and fitness and many more. Many educators use Pinterest to share ideas, too. Come see what the buzz is about!

Third Annual Friends Dinner Held October 25

NH-Antelope Friends Doris Vermillion, Karen Sanders, Karen Lindh, Stefanie Buckmaster and guests attended the third annual Friends dinner. The dinner, in honor of Edgar Allen Poe, was themed to correspond with this year’s One Book Sacramento program sponsored by Sacramento Public Library.

The evening was all things Poe, with silent auction, skits, quizzes and sales of “Get Your Poe On” T-shirts.

Congratulations to the Friends who organized the program and decorated the Elks Lodge. This was a massive undertaking, but handled impressively.

AustenTEAtious: 4th Annual Jane Austen Tea

The Sacramento Public Library invites you to the fourth annual Jane Austen Birthday Tea, on Sunday, December 8 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come celebrate 200 years of Pride and Prejudice with delicious food, beautiful music and lively dancing.

Admission is free to members of the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library. Non-members must pay $15 at the door (or pay $15 to join the Friends on the spot and get free admission). Click here to register (required).

Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. to a book sale and silent auction featuring Jane Austen-inspired gifts. Lunch served at 2 p.m., accompanied by live music by Quite Carried Away and a short talk about Pride and Prejudice by Carrie Sessarego. There will be an English country dancing lesson from 3 to 4 p.m

 Friends Look Forward to 2014

The NH-Antelope Friends held our final meeting of 2013 on Wednesday, October 16.

We all got a chance to meet new branch Supervisor, Kerri Moore and teen librarian, Nicole Powell. Nicole has spearheaded the effort to get a monthly branch calendar, in a print version and online. This is an easy way to see what is going on all month at our branch. (Since the meeting, it was announced that Nicole would be returning to the No. Sacramento branch, and Justin Azevedo will be back handling adult/teen duties at North Highlands-Antelope.)

Kerri is busy putting together a schedule of adult programs for next year, covering everything from planning an estate sale to women’s suffrage and from Lost Restaurants of Sacramento to experiences from World War II. I think there will be something for everyone in our library community.  In addition, the Friends’ and branch are jointly sponsoring a documentary film “The Hidden Wonder of the World, the transcontinental railroad from Sacramento to Donner Summit” developed by local PR executive Bill George to take place in the April timeframe.

The book sale dates for 2014 have been set, with the spring sale April 24-26 and the fall sale October 23-25.

To simplify the task of getting programs arranged and paid for, the Friends authorized the purchase of a $500 gift card to be used by library staff for refreshments, art supplies and similar program related costs. This will simplify the current process considerably, and avoid two or three rounds of check writing.

Most budget issues were delayed until the next meeting, when we will have a better idea of what our branch’s priorities will be.

The next Friends meeting will take place Wednesday, January 15th at 11 a.m.

The number one purpose of the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library, as stated in our Articles of Incorporation, is to create public support for expanding the goals and objectives of the Sacramento Public Library and its Branch Libraries, and to advocate for them to the extent permitted by law.

September-October 2013

News from the North Highlands-Antelope affiliate of the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library

News from Our Branch

by Justin Azevedo and Denise Lee, Branch Librarians

Another successful Summer Reading is winding down at North Highlands-Antelope Library, and once again, a panoply of programs for all ages were presented with the help and support of the Friends. Harmony Henna returned for the third consecutive year, drawing yet another all-ages crowd. The Friends also sponsored a number of special programs for teens, including a raucous dessert-making contest and a weekend tournament of the collectible card game, Yu-Gi-Oh!

The programs don't stop with the end of summer, though. October will bring a puppet presentation of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and in the following months the library will host a live bird of prey program and a Forest Folk craft with the always popular ArtBeast.

Volunteers Needed for Fall Book Sale

Our fall book sale is fast approaching, September 19-21. We have plenty of books to offer; now all we need is about 20 volunteers to help set up and staff the sale.
Our two semi-annual book sales have been netting about $3,000 per year, enough to fund six months of our branch’s Lucky Day collection, or all the children and teen programs for the year.

We are especially eager for volunteers on Thursday, September 19.  Come and work an hour or two anytime between noon and 6 pm, as your schedule allows. We will be filling about 24 tables with books, so many hands will make light work.
It looks as though we have sufficient help on Friday, September 20, but still need assistance all day on Saturday.

If you have a teen, encourage them to sign up for a Saturday shift. Teens waving signs at the both library entrances have proven to be the most effective marketing tool the Friends have for increasing sales.

Contact Stefanie Buckmaster with questions or to sign up for a shift: 916-847-4085 or email stefanie.buckmaster@gmail.com.

Book donations are also welcome. Drop off your gently used books at the circulation desk, preferably one week prior.

Spelling Bee Shaping Up

Spelling Bees are Fun!
The first spelling bee sponsored by the NH-Antelope affiliate of Friends of the Sacramento Public Library is starting to firm up. The event, set for Saturday, October 5, is aimed at our community’s super spellers between the ages of nine and twelve.

The spelling bee will take place in the NH-Antelope library’s community room. Registration will be held onsite from 10 am until 10:45, with the contest set to begin at 11 am.

The Friends are partnering with the Antelope Rotary to present this first ever community event. Trophies will be awarded and the lucky winner will enjoy a wonderful grand prize, a brand new Kindle

Mark Your Calendars for NH-A Friends Quarterly Meeting

The NH-Antelope Friends will hold our next meeting on Wednesday, October 16 at 11 am. The meeting takes place in the NH-Antelope library’s community room.  We will enjoy a potluck lunch as we discuss Friends’ business.

The agenda will include an update on the search for our new branch supervisor, discussing the future of our book sales, and getting familiar with new volunteer tracking guidelines in place for library and Friend volunteers

We will also be brainstorming additional programs to be sponsored by the Friends for our local community for 2014. More craft programs and showing of the documentary film “The Hidden Wonder of the World, the transcontinental railroad from Sacramento to Donner Summit” produced by Bill George are among the prospects. Be sure to mark your calendars now!

Third Annual Friends Dinner October 25, 2013

It is time to make plans for the 3rd Annual Friends dinner, Friday, October 25 at 7:00 pm. Last year, NH-Antelope purchased a table and a great time was had by all. An excellent meal, fun quizzes, silent auction and a chance to mingle with other library supporters made this a must-attend event. And we get to pick a theme from one of Poe’s books. I’m leaning toward “Murders in the Rue Morgue” or “Annabel,” but as branches snap up their favorites, we are left with fewer choices.

...suddenly there came a tapping...
Tickets are $30 each, payable to the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library.

Please let me know if you intend to join NH-Antelope Friends for a fun evening. And if you have a favorite Poe story, costumes are encouraged and best costumes will be judged.

I can be contacted at: karen@klindh.com or 916-591-7269. Reserve your seat today

Developer Impact Fee Vote Pushed Back

The date that the County Board of Supervisors will consider the proposed development impact fee for library buildings has been changed to September 10th (from August 27th.) The agenda will posted online the Friday before at http://bit.ly/16tWyDb

So far it appears that there is sufficient support for the proposed new library fee to get it passed. Nevertheless, please have someone from your affiliate attend if at all possible -- especially if your branch is in the County (not City of Sacramento). We want the Supervisors to see that we are in the audience and that the outcome of their vote is not just a concern for County and SPL staff.

The $63 million that would be collected by 2040 could be used for new construction or major remodeling for library buildings in the unincorporated area in accordance with the SPL Facilities Master Plan.  One or more new branch libraries could be built in yet-to-be-developed areas such as the Vineyard neighborhood or in areas like North Highlands that are expected to become more densely-populated in the next few decades.  Also, these existing branches could be expanded or re-located:

Arcade
Orangevale
Arden-Dimick
Rancho Cordova
Carmichael
Rio Linda/Elverta
Fair Oaks
Southgate

Friends 2012 Financial Report
By Karen Thomas

The Friends of Sacramento Public Library is made of  28 individual branch Friends groups plus Bookmobile Friends and alt+library Friends, all using the same 501(c)(3) designation under the auspices of the Friends of Sacramento Public Library (FSPL) Board. The board also oversees the Friends Book Den and Warehouse, located at 8250 Belvedere Avenue in Sacramento. The FSPL Board is often referred to as the “system board” or the “All Friends board.”

Each year, Friends Treasurer Mike Willis is responsible for collecting financial reports from all the affiliated groups and combining them with the FSPL financial report in order to file our state and federal tax returns.

This is an arduous task and we are grateful to Mike for his patience and commitment to the library and to the Friends organization. Links to the full tax returns are available on the “About” page of our website ~ www.saclibfriends.org. Here is a brief summary of the Friends Revenues and Expenditures for calendar year 2012:

August 2013

News from the North Highlands-Antelope affiliate of the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library

News from Our Branch

The NH-Antelope Library community bade a fond farewell to our branch supervisor, Beth Attard, at a special luncheon on July 12. Beth has been an outstanding leader at our branch and will be sorely missed.

Beth and her husband are looking forward to exciting changes. They are relocating to the Midwest and Beth will begin law school at De Paul University Law School in the fall. She plans to specialize in nonprofit law.

Rivkah Sass, head of the SacPubLibrary system, will be holding interviews for Beth’s replacement. In the interim, Denise Lee, children’s librarian, will act as branch supervisor.

And if you haven’t been in lately, check out the changes to our branch.

Besides some painting and sprucing up, we have moved to a one desk system, which has freed up more floor space.

Please note that the Friends cash box has been moved atop the book case housing the magazines we are selling

Friends to Sponsor Spelling Bee

At our summer meeting and potluck dinner on July 17, the North Highlands-Antelope Friends group began making plans for our first spelling bee. Children in our community between the ages of 9 and 12 are welcome. The spelling bee will be held on Saturday, October 5 in the community room of our branch library. Registration will begin at 10 am and the spelling bee will begin promptly at 11 am. Prizes will be awarded.

If you are interested in helping with the spelling bee, contact Doris Vermillion at rosiegran@hotmail.com or (530) 300-2427.

We will also be holding a papercrafting workshop in early November. Angela Brown will demonstrate useful techniques just in time for the holidays. Supplies will be provided, although we are requesting a $5.00 donation. Stay tuned for more details.

Fall Book Sale Approaches

Don’t forget our semi-annual book sale, which is set for Friday and Saturday, September 20-21. Set up will take place on Thursday, September 19 from noon to 6 pm.

Something for everyone at the Fall Book Sale!
We hope to have a particularly successful fall sale, to ensure that we can begin 2014 with $3,000 for the Lucky Day collection. Lucky Day books continue to be wildly popular, and even though we are spending about $500 per month, the Lucky Day shelves always look empty because the books are checked out.

We are once again calling upon our Friends and teens to volunteer to work this sale. Our volunteer coordinator for the sale is Stefanie Buckmaster, stefanie.buckmaster@gmail.com or (916) 847-4085.

This is a fun event, and gives our volunteers first opportunity to buy our gently used donated books.

Friends Donate Extra Seating for Teen Lounge

At the summer quarterly meeting of the Friends on July 17, we heard about new and ongoing programs at our branch.

In addition to Friends participation at the Summer Reading party and book swap, our volunteers will be assisting Denise Lee with the Cork Boat Racing program on August 1.

Justin Azevedo, our youth/adult librarian discussed some upcoming programs at our branch, including a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament with prizes and a 6 week program on bullying, for kids and by kids, which will be presented at our branch.

With the changes to the floorplan, our teen center now has more space. The Friends authorized an additional $750 for a high top table and chairs to accommodate the high usage of our teen lounge. We expect that this will really add to the comfort and convenience of the teens in our community.

The other major expenditure made at the quarterly meeting was to fully fund the Lucky Day collection until the end of the year.

Mark your calendars for the third quarter meeting, Wednesday, October 17 at 11 am. We will get a status report on the new branch supervisor, and consider funding requests for child, teen and adult programs. We will also evaluate the success of the spelling bee and papercrafting class to determine whether to maintain a schedule of special programs.

Third Annual Friends Dinner October 25, 2013

Friends of SPL Supports Developer Impact Fee

The County Board of Supervisors will take up a proposed new Development Impact Fee at its August 27 meeting. The proposed new fee will be levied upon infill projects in the unincorporated portions of Sacramento County. While the money collected with the proposed fee would not provide 100% of the funding needed for library construction over the next few decades, it would provide enough working capital to allow the County, the Library Authority Board and the Library Administration to seek partners, apply for grants, or solicit donations for the remainder.

The Friends of the Sacramento Public Library has communicated with the Board of Supervisors how important this measure is to the Sacramento Public Library and the Sacramento Library Authority. The long term plan for the SPL system recognizes the need for an additional library in the North Highlands area, so passage of this new fee will directly benefit our community.
