Happy New Year!
News from Our Branch
by Kerri Moore, Branch Supervisor
We
were pleased to have Nicol Huntington join our staff in November. Nicol is the branch’s first ever Library
Technology Assistant. She has jumped
into the assignment with both feet, talking to a crowd of more than fifty job
seekers at the Sacramento One Stop Career Center Hillsdale about job resources
available at the library her first week on the job. Nicol will also be offering a six-session,
hands-on Introduction to Computers course at the branch beginning January
17. Registration is required and can be
done at the library, online at www.saclibrary.org, or by calling 916-264-2920.
We will be celebrating Black History Month in a big way this February!
Get on the Bus: the story of Rosa
Parks features
Angela James sharing a living history through vignettes of the day for school
age children at 4 pm on Thursday, February 13.
Sister
Sheba shows teens how to twist, bend, weave and wrap wire to create wearable
art. All Wrapped Up: An Introduction to
Wire Wrapped Jewelry is scheduled at 4 pm on Wednesday, February 26.
Adults
can explore the history of Sacramento’s Black owned restaurants, including a
cooking demonstration and tasting at the ArtWorks program Soul Food, Barbecue, Jazz and Haute Cuisine at 2 pm on Saturday,

Your Calendars for NH-A Friends “What’s Your Interest in Pinterest” Workshop
Following
on the heels of our fun and informative “Paper Crafting with Angela” class in
December, the NH-A Friends will be holding a workshop offering basic
instruction into the social networking site, Pinterest. Our Pinterest guide,
Stefanie Buckmaster, will explain what Pinterest is all about, and how to use
it. Pinterest is a tool for collecting and organizing
things - recipes, crafts, fashion, professional strategies, new places to visit,
whatever interests you. The breadth of information shared is astonishing.
Stefanie
will demystify “boards” and “pins,” cover the broad array of topics that others
have created, and show you how to tailor Pinterest to best meet your own
interests. Don’t miss this chance for a guided tour, Tuesday, February 11 at 6:30
pm at the North Highlands-Antelope library community room. A $5 donation is
requested. Contact NHAntelope.Friends@gmail.com for more information or to
reserve a space. And share the info with
your friends!
NH-Antelope Friends 1st Quarter Meeting Set
The
North Highlands-Antelope affiliate will be holding its first meeting of the
year on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, starting at 11:00 am, along with a potluck
lunch. We will hear from Kerri Moore about the diverse number of adult programs
that will be held at the branch, as well as from Denise Lee and Justin Azevedo,
who will describe children and teen programming on tap for the first quarter.
We will
consider budget requests to meet our library’s needs during the first half of
the year. Annual election of officers will be held at this meeting. The current
Board members will be nominated to serve an additional term, although
nominations from the floor will also be welcomed.
Planning
for the first major book sale of the year, in April, will begin and discussion
of whether to continue the mini book sales will be up for discussion.
We will
have a potluck lunch during the meeting, with entrée provided, and Friends
invited to bring a side dish or dessert.
Paper Crafting Class with Angela Fun for All
A big
thanks to Angela Brown for her fantastic paper crafting class in December.
Angie created two templates for holiday gift tags and cards, provided all the
supplies and gave us step by step instruction to creating our own little paper
masterpieces. All the participants left with beautiful, unique tags and cards,
along with a newfound confidence to create our next holiday tag.
All the
participants agreed that this class was great fun, and informative. And
everyone fell in love with Angie’s paper embossing machine! We hope we can
convince Angie to come back and do a second class!
