News from the North Highlands-Antelope affiliate of the Friends of Sacramento Public Library

“It was good to walk into a library again; it smelled like home.”

News from our Branch

Summer Reading is Coming!

From June 1-August 31, complete a summer reading activity sheet or read 5 books to receive your prize:
  • Kids and teens – free book to keep
  • Adults – reusable book bag

Keep reading all summer long. Every 5 books read earns an entry in the grand prize drawing! You could win:
  • iPad mini – Grand prize (One per age group)
  • $50 Barnes and Noble gift card (Branch prize, 3 per location)

The first 40,000 people to sign up will receive a complimentary ticket to a Kings game! (must be accompanied by a paying adult ticket)

Summer Reading 2014 will begin June 1 with this year’s theme Paws to Read. North Highlands-Antelope Library will present 10 weeks of children’s programs—many programs feature live animals. Our NHI Friends group will support Nature’s Critters with Lisa Seto, Music and More with Alan Candee, Pet Picasso with ArtWorks, the Summer Reading Party and Book Swap, Cork Critters and Altered Picture Books.

Denise Lee, Children's Librarian
We hope to sign up more kids of all ages this year and surpass last years’ number of finishers. I will be visiting Sierra View School in North Highlands in June to promote Summer Reading 2014 and sign up students. In 2013, all the students in the summer school session finished and received a new Scholastic book of their choice.

Justin Azevedo, Teen Librarian
Summer Reading outreach to teens is in full swing. I visited thirteen classrooms at the Creative Connections Arts Academy high school campus, and am preparing similar visits for Foothill High School and Foothill Ranch Middle School. In addition to the perennial chance at a Barnes & Noble gift card and an iPad Mini, teens can earn digital "badges" this year for reading or coming to the library. Special Summer Reading teen programs include a teen-led workshop on creating balloon animals, an after-hours Minecraft event, the return of Harmony Henna, and a lock-in at three library branches with spots reserved specifically for those who complete their Summer Reading gamecard.

Kerri Moore, Branch Manager
Summer Reading is for adults too! Special monthly programs include author Barry Martin discussing his book, Forgotten Aviator: The Adventures of Royal Leonard, Sister Sheba helping you to create wire wrapped jewelry, and Sacramento Room Librarian James Scott sharing tales from his book, Sacramento’s Gold Rush Saloons: El Dorado in a Shot Glass.

BOOK SALE FORMATS, FREQUENCY TO CHANGE

At the April quarterly meeting, NH-Antelope Friends decided to move to a new book sale format. Instead of the current schedule of seven mini-monthly sales and two large scale sales each year, we will hold four quarterly sales per year in the library’s community room. The new format will be implemented with the October 31-November 1 sale.

There will be fewer tables of books than presently available during our spring and fall sales, but we will still try and offer book selections in each genre.

The changes to our current system stem from the need to manage our volunteer hours in a more efficient manner, and as a reflection of the fact that book sale revenues have been declining.

The NH-Antelope Friends recently invested in a new storage system in our book closet. Instead of stacks of cardboard boxes, we now have shelves and a bin system that should make it easier to turn over our supply of gently used books and other media materials.

SPRING BOOK SALE NETS $1,000

Big thanks to all the volunteers that worked the Spring Book Sale, April 24-26! Thirty one volunteers contributed more than 125 hours to help make our spring sale a success.

About $1,000 was added to the Friends account, which will help fund library programs during the 3rd quarter of 2014.

We were really lucky to have a troupe of dedicated teen volunteers from Antelope and Center High Schools.

Thanks also to our adult volunteers: Karen Sanders, Harold Navroth, Doris Vermillion, Michelle Weeks, Michele Weiss, Stefanie Buckmaster, Chuck Solt, Carole and George Raine, Ed and Gayle Fishkin, Mary Cacchiolo, Charlyne Nichols, Pam Farrell Webb, Joy Skalbeck, and Gail Johnson.

A huge vote of thanks goes to our book sale chair, Debby Cooney, who made this a well-organized event.

SPL RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

The Sacramento Public Library was one of eight libraries around the nation to win the prestigious John Cotton Dana Award from the American Library Association. The award, which comes with a $10,000 prize, recognizes excellence in “library public relations.” The win was for the advertising campaign supporting One Book Sacramento: The Works of Edgar Allan Poe. In March, the One Book campaign took two awards at the local 2013-14 American Advertising Federation Awards hosted by the Sacramento Ad Club. SPL moved on to take silver at the regional awards, and will be heading on to the national competition, with winners to be announced May 31.

SUMMER READING AND PROGRAMS OFFERED SUPPORT

At the NH-Antelope Friends’ April 16 meeting, branch supervisor Kerri Moore and Justin Azevedo provided an update on children, teen and adult programs planned for the summer. The big thrust will be Summer Reading (see lead article).

Kerri also highlighted some of the Friend –sponsored programs, including “The Hidden Wonders of the World, the Transcontinental Railroad from Sacramento to the Donner Summit” held in early April. If you missed this fascinating presentation by Bill George, copies of his book are available for $20 and the DVD for $10. Next up, local author Barry S. Martin will share true tales of Royal Leonard’s extraordinary adventures from his book “Forgotten Aviator: The adventures of Royal Leonard.” Mark your calendar now for June 21 at 2 p.m. in the library’s community room.

The Friends approved $1100 in funding for program during the summer, including $200 for “All Wrapped Up: Create Wire Wrapped Jewelry!” an adult program set for July 12. Other programs funded by the Friends include teen programs Anime Club, Manga Mania, Teen Advisory Board, Dungeons and Dragons, and TnT Teen book Club.

In addition to the programs budget, $500 was authorized for supplies.

A one-time allocation of $800 was approved to create a safer and more accessible book storage system in the Friends’ book closet. In addition, we also approved a change to the current book sale schedule (see 2nd article above).

Our next scheduled meeting is Wednesday, July 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. This is our annual Potluck dinner meeting, and we invite our working Friends to come check us out and help set spending priorities for the North Highlands-Antelope library.

JUNE 3 IS DECISION DAY FOR MEASURE B

When Sacramento City voters go to the polls on June 3, they will vote on Measure B, which will determine the future funding level and viability of our twelve city libraries. The measure would increase city residents’ parcel tax by $12 per year for single family residences.

According to the Sacramento City Attorney, the ordinance will take affect only if two-thirds of the voters approve Measure B.

Measure B has been endorsed by the Sacramento Bee, the Friends of Sacramento Public Library, the Sacramento Public Library Foundation, Firefighters Local 522, Sacramento Police Officers Association, Mayor ProTem Angelique Ashby, and by educators and community leaders throughout Sacramento.

If Measure B does not pass, it is likely that several city libraries will close.

No Argument against Measure B was submitted to the City Clerk.

Don’t forget to donate your gently used books, especially paperbacks,
audiobooks, DVDs and CDs to the Friends.
