November-December 2017

"When I was young, we couldn't afford much. But, my library card was my key to the world.”

John Goodman, Actor

 NEWS FROM OUR BRANCH
Job Coach – We have a wonderful new volunteer named Maria who is helping our patrons get jobs! Anyone can walk in to the library to meet one-on-one with Maria. She will help spruce up a resume, learn job searching techniques, practice interviewing skills, get an email address, and more. No appointment needed. Maria will be available bi-weekly: on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month, 11am to 1pm. Please help spread the word about this free service.

Holiday Concert: Renaissance Choir - Enjoy a free performance by local chamber singers Renaissance Choir Sacramento. Their concert will feature holiday music from long ago and far away, including pieces from England, America, France, Spain and Germany dating from the early 1500s to the late 1700s. The music will be sung in Latin, English, Spanish and German, expressing the wide range of emotions associated with this festive season. 7pm Tuesday, December 7.

Book Club Potluck and Book Swap – Join the final 2017 gathering to celebrate all of our reading for the year! Tell us all about your favorite book(s) ever or all of the great books you read outside of book club this year. Bring a snack to share with the group, and a book or two (or as many as you like!) for the book swap. We will also hand out the titles for the January book clubs. 10:30am Saturday, December 16.

Family Holiday Programs – Don’t miss the holiday-themed festivities happening at the library for all ages. Give thanks and give back:

The Classics Book Club will feature monthly titles picked directly from the exclusive Core Classics collection that is housed at the North Highlands-Antelope Library. What makes a book a “classic”? Why do some titles have relevance that reflects our values and culture through the years? Why are high school and college students still reading these? How does literature stay meaningful? Come discuss these ideas and more, a new title will be picked every month. The first meeting is 1pm Saturday, January 13.

FALL BOOK SALE NETS  $1,000
The fall book sale took place on Friday and Saturday, November 3 and 4. We had a lot of great titles, along with plenty of DVDs, CDs and audiobooks. We think the poor weather took a toll on our attendance, because foot traffic was light on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. The sale netted about $1,000, a bit less than the last two sales, but still enough to cover about three months of Lucky Day books.

Thanks to our fabulous volunteers, set up and break down was like a well-oiled machine. We had adult volunteers from the Friends, teen volunteers from Center and Antelope High Schools, and a handful of teen volunteers from the library. Thank you so much for all your help!

The next book sale will be in February 2018.

SACRAMENTO PUBLIC LIBRARY’S BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR A BIG SUCCESS

Donors to the Big Day of Giving and members of all branch Friends Boards were invited to a special after hours Behind the Scenes tour of the Central branch on October 26.
There were a lot interesting stops on the tour, which took place after the library was closed for the day.  One highlight, the Collections department in the lower level of the Central library. Staff highlighted how books are chosen to be added to the SPL collection. In light of the many, many books published monthly, the library staff has a very sophisticated system for determining what to add, and how many copies will be needed to service the library community.

The new automated machine that sends books along a conveyor belt to the bin going to each branch was a marvel. And tour participants got to take a crack at setting a book or two upon its way.
The Youth Service department on the top floor gave us a bird’s eye view of the Library Galleria. Staff talked abut the many ways that children are being helped with literacy, not the least of which is the Book First program. Book First, which is funded by the Friends from Sacramento’s Big Day of Giving, provides free books to first graders in schools around the county. It appears that North Highlands-Antelope will have 15 schools in our community participating in Book First from January through May.
Don’t be left out. Support the Friends of Sacramento Public Library in May 2018, and get your own invitation to the Behind the Scenes event next year.

September - October 2017

NEWS FROM OUR BRANCH

Let there be light! New track lighting has been installed in The Friends Store area in the entryway. The space is now much brighter and even more appealing to potential shoppers.

New Librarian Our new Teen Librarian Meghan Casey arrived at the branch on August 24. Megan comes to us from the Los Angeles Public Library system and brings a lot of experience and valuable skills to our staff. Already she is planning more teen programs and scheduling outreach meetings with librarians and teachers at local schools. Welcome Meghan!

Community Room Hours Did you know that the library’s Community Room can now be reserved for use beyond the hours that the library is open? Outside groups may request a reservation anytime from 9am-10pm Tuesday-Friday, and 9am-5pm Saturdays. Remember that to use the meeting room, your event must be open to the public and free of charge to attend. Reservations can be made online via the Sacramento Public Library website: http://www.saclibrary.org/Locations/Meeting-Rooms/

Summer Reading Well, the 2017 run of Summer Reading has concluded and by all accounts it was a resounding success. Systemwide, Sacramento Public Library had a record number of participants – over 20,000! Here at the North Highlands-Antelope branch we did our part by signing up 1,620 readers who read a total of 12,821 books!

Lunch @ the Library For the second summer in a row, the North Highlands-Antelope Library happily participated in the Lunch @ the Library program. For eight weeks, we opened our Community Room doors and served up free, nutritious lunches to kids ages 0-18. This is a wonderful program organized by the United Way in conjunction with the local school districts as the food service providers. All totaled, our volunteer run program dished out 1,113 meals to children in our community. That is more than 100 meals than last year! We look forward to providing even more free lunches again 2018.

Homework Zone School’s back in and so is our Homework Zone. Starting Thursday, September 7 our awesome volunteer Chuck will be here every week 3:30-5:30pm to help out school aged kids with homework.

Yoga We’re offering an exciting new program for adults in the coming months. Yoga is increasingly popular for its physical and mental benefits. Enjoy a free yoga lesson and experience its grounding, calming effects, while increasing your strength, flexibility and balance. All skill levels beginner to advanced are welcome. Please wear loose clothing and bring your own water bottle and yoga mat. Instructor Joan Howell has been teaching yoga for 20 years. Three dates only! 1pm Saturday September 16, October 21, and December 16.

Color Analysis Have you ever wondered what colors look best on you? At this fun event for adults, you’ll receive a list of the universal colors that everyone can wear and a chart that unlocks the mystery of color analysis. This event is a fundraiser for the North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library. A suggested donation of $10 (or more!) will help fund library programs and Lucky Day materials. Seating is limited and reservations are required! 6pm Tuesday, September 27.

Kristi Powell, Branch Supervisor

FRIENDS WANT YOU TO LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST!

Right on the heels of our successful Tea and History Fundraiser, the Friends have several more fun activities taking place before the end of the year.

On Tuesday, September 27 at 6:00 pm, our Friend Nancy Matlin will conduct a class to help us each look our best. Nancy is a Color Me Beautiful trained consultant, and teaches the popular Makeover Magic class at Sierra College. We are lucky enough to have her right here in our community! Color Analysis is a very useful tool in building a coordinated wardrobe. So learn something new, have fun with old and new friends and enjoy delicious refreshments. This is a fundraiser, so we are suggesting a donation of $5, $10 or whatever you feel is fair.

Registration for the Color Analysis program must be done online. Here’s the link:  Makeover Magic

The Friends are sponsoring the library's new yoga program for adults, as Kristi described (above). Join us in the library's Community Room for a free yoga class taught by Instructor Joan Howell on Saturday, September 16 at 1:00 pm. This class is easily accessible even by beginners, so if you have a yen for Zen, pencil in these three dates: September 16, October 21 and December 16. If you have always wanted to try yoga, this is a best bet, with gentle poses emphasizing flexibility and balance. Bring a yoga mat, and wear loose clothing.

In October, Nancy Matlin will return with another class designed to keep us looking sharp. She will be reprising the scarf program she first presented in 2016 to a very appreciative audience. The program will take place October 25. Spoiler alert: there are an unbelievable number of ways to wear a scarf. Once again this will be a Friends' fundraiser, with a suggested $5 or $10 or $? donation. Refreshments will be provided.

FRIENDS FALL MEETING SET FOR OCTOBER

Mark your calendars for our fall meeting, Wednesday, October 18 at 11:00 am. At this meeting, we will get an update from Kristi about what’s new at the branch and programming proposed for the coming months, and authorize spending for new and recurring programs and Lucky Day books. We will also begin the planning process to develop a volunteer list for the 2018 BookFirst program. The goal is to have one or two Friends volunteers assist children’s librarian, Denise Lee, in every visit to schools selected by Sacramento Public Library for our free book giveaway to first graders. In 2017, 15 schools were eligible in the North Highlands-Antelope communities. In 2018, we expect that number to grow, as funds raised during the Big Day of Giving increased. We will also get a final report on the Tea and History event, with recommendations made by committee members for next year’s tea. One suggestion made was to link the annual tea with Mother’s Day, and so a final decision needs to be made for next year. Finally, we will review what’s going with on with the Friends of Sacramento Public Library, our umbrella organization, and how that may effect North Highlands-Antelope and all the other branch Friends.

FALL BOOK SALE

Having taken the summer off to focus on our annual tea, the Friends are now planning their next book sale, for the weekend of November 4 and 5th. Set up will occur on Thursday afternoon, November 3. As always, we are hoping for 15-20 volunteers to help set up, staff and break down. Our shelves are groaning, and we really need help to get all our books on display to make room for all the new book donations. This is a very flexible way to volunteer for your community. Shifts are from one hour to all day, as you prefer. We are phasing out the heavy red bin system, so it also important to have more hands to handle smaller, lighter book storage units.

If you are interested, contact Karen Lindh at karen.lindh@icloud.com, and I will provide you with the relevant information as we get closer to the sale.

Each of our successful book sales provides between $1200-$1300, nearly 10% of our entire annual budget. Having a great sale ensures that we can continue to fund Lucky Day, and wonderful programs such as yoga classes, puppet and animal programs for the kids, and all the programs that enhance our teens’ library experience.

TEA AND HISTORY A SELLOUT FOR THE SECOND YEAR

Tea and History, held August 5, was a great success for our Friends’ group. Speaker James Scott presented interesting stories and pictures about the Sacramento Community generally and about North Highlands back in the day (Walerga vs Walegra, that got some reaction from the crowd). We are very grateful to Mr. Scott and Sacramento Public Library, for allowing him to bring to our branch some of the treasures that are usually housed in the Sacramento Room at the Central branch.

James Scott had our attention

A full house, lots of good food, lots of hats, and camaraderie marked the day. The success rests upon all the work done by volunteers before, during and after the event. A special thank you to Debby Karaman, Nancy Matlin (who made the fabulous floral centerpieces), Karen Sanders, BJ Mullenix, Charlyne Nichols, Kathy Berg, Hanne Robinson, Stefanie Buckmaster, Sigrid Willgohs, Chuck Solt, Mary Caicchiolo, and Michelle Weeks! And let’s not forget the teen volunteers, who worked in the kitchen and, served our guests and cleaned up! Thanks to Lupe, Dyson, Harry, Selina, and Chloe!
Our fantastic teen volunteers!

We can hardly wait till next year! There are more pictures than we can post but here are a few more.

Friends Quarterly Meeting Set for July 19

The North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library will be meeting on Wednesday, July 19 at 6:00 pm in the library’s community room. This is our annual “evening” dinner meeting, to allow our working families a chance to be involved with the Friends. Entree will be provided, but Friends are asked to bring a drink or a side dish. Because we will be ordering food, please RSVP to President Debby Karaman at debbykaraman@gmail.com or nhantelope.friends@gmail.com.

Branch supervisor Kristi Powell will be outlining upcoming programs, plus any requested funds to pay for them, along with Lucky Day books and other “wish list” library expenditures. We will also discuss the fall book sale and any additional fundraising proposals. We will also entertain the suggestion to establish a North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library Facebook page.

If you haven’t already done so, stop by the library and check out our new Friends of the Library Book Store.  It is located in the library foyer.  The shelves are filled with current publications, children’s books, DVDs and many more. And if you see one of our book sorting volunteers in the Friends room at the rear of the building, stop by and say hi.

Big Day of Giving Means Books for First Graders

The Big Day of Giving, held May 4, was a success in raising funds for the 500 nonprofits participating, and the Friends of SacPubLibrary are no exception. Raising $32,000 (a $7,000 increase over 2016 BDoG), the Friends Board has committed to a second year of funding  Sacramento Public Library’s Book First program. This year, there were 15 schools in North Highlands where first grade students received a free book. We expect the number of our neighborhood schools to jump in 2018 with the increase of revenue.

In the fall, we will be recruiting Friends volunteers to help children’s librarian Denise Lee distribute books to first graders. This is the volunteer activity with the biggest bang for the smallest time commitment. It is a heartwarming event, and each session lasts for less than an hour. The actual distributions will occur at the first of the year, but training will take place later this year.

Walnut Grove Meeting Gives Branch Friends a Chance to Catch Up
About twenty branch Friends groups met in Walnut Grove on June 24 to hear the latest Friends news. Dianne Dobbs, Vice President, reported that during the Big Day of Giving, we raised $32,300 with 309 donors, which  will once again be used to fund the Book First program. Ellen McCaslin, board member, noted the great success of the initial Book First distribution, with 8800 first graders receiving a book in 118 schools, and 1162 library cards issued in the 47 schools that participated in that part of the program. With added funding, Ellen indicated, the program can be expanded to even more schools. And Michele Beyer, Board Member, gave a tutorial to branches on how to set up and use their own Facebook account. Finally, branches shared some great ideas on membership development and fund raising.

The next All Friends meeting will be Saturday, September 30 at 1:30 pm at the Arcade Library on Marconi Avenue, Sacramento.

Thanks for Making May Book Sale a Success
In spite of the fact that our library remained closed, the May book sale was quite successful, thanks to our fantastic volunteers. Our Friends helped spread the word on social media, organized the books for sale, manned the sale, and then helped clean up the community room and organize the book closet in record time. We sold more than 1,000 books and earned about $1200, which is good for any sale, but astonishing since we didn't have library patrons, who normally visit the sale.
Adult volunteers took on a much bigger role than usual, since we had very few teen volunteers this sale. I think one result is that we ended up with a stock of better books that are better organized, making the next sale that much easier. A big thanks to Deb Karaman and her husband Jeff, Kathy and Russ Berg, Gayle and Ed Fishkin, Karen Sanders, Stefanie Buckmaster and her son Charles, Sigrid Willgohs, Dyanna Lari, Hanne Robinson, Rita Deeter, Charlyne Nichols, Christian Dumlao, and Chuck Solt.
Since we are holding the Tea Fundraiser in August, our next scheduled book sale is Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4.

New Friends "Book Store" and Sorting Room
You can now check out the new Friends' shelves in the foyer, where our gently used books will be on sale. I think you will be impressed by the look and organization of our shelves. It will be much easier to shop now that all the books are together in one spot.
And the library has offered us the old tutoring room, directly behind the community room at the back of the building, to sort and store Friends' books. We are very excited to have our own space at the library, so if the door to the Friends' room is open, stop by and say hi to one of our sorters.

Tea and History
Friends of the North Highlands-Antelope will sponsor our second annual fundraiser tea on Saturday, August 5 at 1:30 pm in the library's community room. This year, the theme is "Tea and History - Artifacts and Anecdotes," a lighthearted look at California's history. Our presenter is James Scott, who is one of Sacramento Public Library's Sacramento Room experts. Mr. Scott will bring some of the fascinating objects in SPL's collection, equally interesting to those that have visited the Sacramento Room and those that haven't. This year, we encourage you to bring the gentlemen in your lives, since the topic should be entertaining for all. Last year's tea was completely sold out. As Friends you are getting first news of the event, so purchase your tickets before they go on sale to the general public. To order tickets, you can either email us at nhantelope.friends@gmail with your order, phone tea chairperson Karen Lindh (916) 591-7269, or to order with your credit card, follow the link: https://squareup.com/store/north-highlands-antelope-friends-of-sacramento-public-library/. Click on the picture and the information for the tea comes up. We are asking for a $20 donation. And if you are interested in participating on the tea committee, please contact Karen Lindh at the phone number above or karen@klindh.com. We have several committees, food, decor, and set up/clean up, and can always use additional volunteers.

Book First
Friends of Sacramento Public Library earned over $30,000 as a result of this year's Big Day of Giving on May 4. Thanks to all who donated this year. All proceeds will be dedicated to the Book First program, which provides free books to first graders in underserved schools in the County. First graders in fourteen schools in the North Highlands-Antelope library area received a free book this year, and we expect that more schools will be involved next year with the additional funding.
We had seven Friends volunteers that went with Children's librarian Denise Lee into the schools this year. If you are interested in participating in this project for next year (and it is rewarding and heart-warming), please send an email to: nhantelope.friends@gmail.com.

River Cats Game
If the Big Day of Giving came and went, and you missed the opportunity to donate, you have a second, and much more fun, chance to help expand Book First in the community.  It’s time for the Sacramento Public Library’s River Cat’s game fundraiser and all around good time.  This year it is taking place on Saturday, May 20th.  Here’s what you get with a purchase of a ticket ($20.00 for a seat, $12 for a seat on the lawn).

  1. A great time in a beautiful park with fellow library supporters.
  2. A great place to wear your new library shirt or polo!
  3. A fun time at a ballgame (and trust me, you don’t even need to know what’s going on…Minor League Baseball is a kick!).
  4. Watch Rivkah make the first pitch J.
  5. Watch Otterby and Rivkah accept a big check that will help fund the Book First project!
  6. Participate in a 50/50 Raffle (that’s where you could win ½ the pot if your ticket is pulled…the library gets the other ½).  This can be a couple thousand dollars with enough people playing.
  7. Listen to our very talented Librettos (Sacramento Public Library’s own choral group) sing at the end of the game.
  8. Watch excellent fireworks right after the choral group sings.

And while you are enjoying the game, indulging in some great ballpark food and beverage, and taking in the beautiful Sacramento evening, we will be reminding people about Summer Reading and other Library services from our table on the Concourse and our JumboTron remarks!

Come join in the fun.  It’s for a great cause (books to first graders!) and a great way to hang with your co-workers in a casual and different environment.

How to buy your tickets:
  1. Click the link to our River Cats page
  2. Click the “Purchase Tickets” button
  3. Input Promo Code read17
  4. Select seats, pay with credit card
