NEWS FROM OUR BRANCH
Let there be light! New track lighting has been installed in The Friends Store area in the entryway. The space is now much brighter and even more appealing to potential shoppers.
New Librarian Our new Teen Librarian Meghan Casey arrived at the branch on August 24. Megan comes to us from the Los Angeles Public Library system and brings a lot of experience and valuable skills to our staff. Already she is planning more teen programs and scheduling outreach meetings with librarians and teachers at local schools. Welcome Meghan!
Community Room Hours Did you know that the library’s Community Room can now be reserved for use beyond the hours that the library is open? Outside groups may request a reservation anytime from 9am-10pm Tuesday-Friday, and 9am-5pm Saturdays. Remember that to use the meeting room, your event must be open to the public and free of charge to attend. Reservations can be made online via the Sacramento Public Library website: http://www.saclibrary.org/Locations/Meeting-Rooms/
Summer Reading Well, the 2017 run of Summer Reading has concluded and by all accounts it was a resounding success. Systemwide, Sacramento Public Library had a record number of participants – over 20,000! Here at the North Highlands-Antelope branch we did our part by signing up 1,620 readers who read a total of 12,821 books!
Lunch @ the Library For the second summer in a row, the North Highlands-Antelope Library happily participated in the Lunch @ the Library program. For eight weeks, we opened our Community Room doors and served up free, nutritious lunches to kids ages 0-18. This is a wonderful program organized by the United Way in conjunction with the local school districts as the food service providers. All totaled, our volunteer run program dished out 1,113 meals to children in our community. That is more than 100 meals than last year! We look forward to providing even more free lunches again 2018.
Homework Zone School’s back in and so is our Homework Zone. Starting Thursday, September 7 our awesome volunteer Chuck will be here every week 3:30-5:30pm to help out school aged kids with homework.
Yoga We’re offering an exciting new program for adults in the coming months. Yoga is increasingly popular for its physical and mental benefits. Enjoy a free yoga lesson and experience its grounding, calming effects, while increasing your strength, flexibility and balance. All skill levels beginner to advanced are welcome. Please wear loose clothing and bring your own water bottle and yoga mat. Instructor Joan Howell has been teaching yoga for 20 years. Three dates only! 1pm Saturday September 16, October 21, and December 16.
Color Analysis Have you ever wondered what colors look best on you? At this fun event for adults, you’ll receive a list of the universal colors that everyone can wear and a chart that unlocks the mystery of color analysis. This event is a fundraiser for the North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library. A suggested donation of $10 (or more!) will help fund library programs and Lucky Day materials. Seating is limited and reservations are required! 6pm Tuesday, September 27.

FRIENDS WANT YOU TO LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST!
Right on the heels of our successful Tea and History Fundraiser, the Friends have several more fun activities taking place before the end of the year.
On Tuesday, September 27 at 6:00 pm, our Friend Nancy Matlin will conduct a class to help us each look our best. Nancy is a Color Me Beautiful trained consultant, and teaches the popular Makeover Magic class at Sierra College. We are lucky enough to have her right here in our community! Color Analysis is a very useful tool in building a coordinated wardrobe. So learn something new, have fun with old and new friends and enjoy delicious refreshments. This is a fundraiser, so we are suggesting a donation of $5, $10 or whatever you feel is fair.
Registration for the Color Analysis program must be done online. Here’s the link: Makeover Magic
The Friends are sponsoring the library's new yoga program for adults, as Kristi described (above). Join us in the library's Community Room for a free yoga class taught by Instructor Joan Howell on Saturday, September 16 at 1:00 pm. This class is easily accessible even by beginners, so if you have a yen for Zen, pencil in these three dates: September 16, October 21 and December 16. If you have always wanted to try yoga, this is a best bet, with gentle poses emphasizing flexibility and balance. Bring a yoga mat, and wear loose clothing.
In October, Nancy Matlin will return with another class designed to keep us looking sharp. She will be reprising the scarf program she first presented in 2016 to a very appreciative audience. The program will take place October 25. Spoiler alert: there are an unbelievable number of ways to wear a scarf. Once again this will be a Friends' fundraiser, with a suggested $5 or $10 or $? donation. Refreshments will be provided.
FRIENDS FALL MEETING SET FOR OCTOBER
Mark your calendars for our fall meeting, Wednesday, October 18 at 11:00 am. At this meeting, we will get an update from Kristi about what’s new at the branch and programming proposed for the coming months, and authorize spending for new and recurring programs and Lucky Day books. We will also begin the planning process to develop a volunteer list for the 2018 BookFirst program. The goal is to have one or two Friends volunteers assist children’s librarian, Denise Lee, in every visit to schools selected by Sacramento Public Library for our free book giveaway to first graders. In 2017, 15 schools were eligible in the North Highlands-Antelope communities. In 2018, we expect that number to grow, as funds raised during the Big Day of Giving increased. We will also get a final report on the Tea and History event, with recommendations made by committee members for next year’s tea. One suggestion made was to link the annual tea with Mother’s Day, and so a final decision needs to be made for next year. Finally, we will review what’s going with on with the Friends of Sacramento Public Library, our umbrella organization, and how that may effect North Highlands-Antelope and all the other branch Friends.
FALL BOOK SALE
Having taken the summer off to focus on our annual tea, the Friends are now planning their next book sale, for the weekend of November 4 and 5th. Set up will occur on Thursday afternoon, November 3. As always, we are hoping for 15-20 volunteers to help set up, staff and break down. Our shelves are groaning, and we really need help to get all our books on display to make room for all the new book donations. This is a very flexible way to volunteer for your community. Shifts are from one hour to all day, as you prefer. We are phasing out the heavy red bin system, so it also important to have more hands to handle smaller, lighter book storage units.
If you are interested, contact Karen Lindh at karen.lindh@icloud.com, and I will provide you with the relevant information as we get closer to the sale.
Each of our successful book sales provides between $1200-$1300, nearly 10% of our entire annual budget. Having a great sale ensures that we can continue to fund Lucky Day, and wonderful programs such as yoga classes, puppet and animal programs for the kids, and all the programs that enhance our teens’ library experience.
TEA AND HISTORY A SELLOUT FOR THE SECOND YEAR
Tea and History, held August 5, was a great success for our Friends’ group. Speaker James Scott presented interesting stories and pictures about the Sacramento Community generally and about North Highlands back in the day (Walerga vs Walegra, that got some reaction from the crowd). We are very grateful to Mr. Scott and Sacramento Public Library, for allowing him to bring to our branch some of the treasures that are usually housed in the Sacramento Room at the Central branch.
A full house, lots of good food, lots of hats, and camaraderie marked the day. The success rests upon all the work done by volunteers before, during and after the event. A special thank you to Debby Karaman, Nancy Matlin (who made the fabulous floral centerpieces), Karen Sanders, BJ Mullenix, Charlyne Nichols, Kathy Berg, Hanne Robinson, Stefanie Buckmaster, Sigrid Willgohs, Chuck Solt, Mary Caicchiolo, and Michelle Weeks! And let’s not forget the teen volunteers, who worked in the kitchen and, served our guests and cleaned up! Thanks to Lupe, Dyson, Harry, Selina, and Chloe!

We can hardly wait till next year! There are more pictures than we can post but here are a few more.
