NH-Antelope Nov-Dec. 2018 Newsletter

North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library End of Year Newsletter

Happy Holidays from the North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library

NEWS FROM THE BRANCH

Have you visited the library lately? If not, you may not be aware that, since September, hours have been extended for our branch:

North Highlands-Antelope Library

Sunday: Noon to 5 pm
Monday-Thursday: 10 am to 7 pm
Friday and Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm

There are programs for all ages, from tot to adult.

For adults, there are three different book clubs, and in November, there was a fantastic crafting program for constructing pinecone ornaments! These were made by the crafters at my table.

For teens, lots of fun activities, including Minecraft, game night and chess club.

And youth services librarian Denise Lee offers baby and toddler time, and interesting after school activities.

All programs are listed on the saclibrary.org website, just link to North Highlands-Antelope on the locations tab.

BOOK FIRST WILL GEAR UP IN JANUARY
During the Big Day of Giving in May 2018, the Friends raised about $36,000 to fund Sacramento Public Library’s Book First program, which provides free books to first graders in underserved communities. Access to books at an early age helps children develop crucial reading skills. Having a book of their own motivates children to learn to read, so that they can later read to learn. Sacramento Public Library’s Book First program promotes first graders’ reading skills by giving them what is often the very first book they will own.

In 2018-19, the goals is to serve 13,000 first graders in 170 schools in the city and county of Sacramento. In the North Highlands-Antelope area, 19 schools will be included in the Book First distribution.

One of our Friends will accompany the librarian to each school to help with the distribution. This is a fun and very rewarding volunteer opportunity. If you are interested in participating in one or two school visits, contact Karen Lindh, karen.lindh@icloud.com, and I will provide the dates of visits scheduled.

FALL BOOK SALE AND $5 BAG SALE A SUCCESS
Lots of great books, our fabulous volunteers, the holiday bazaar on Saturday and the new $5 bag sale produced a successful three day sale. We made about $1200, so we look forward to continue funding Lucky Day books and as many programs as possible.

Our next sale is set for Friday, February 8 - Sunday, February 10. We intend to continue the $5 per bag sale on Sunday. We have had a lot of donations over the past couple of weeks, so expect that selection will be excellent.

North Highlands-Antelope Library

Sunday: Noon to 5 pm
Monday-Thursday: 10 am to 7 pm
Friday and Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm

If you have been in the branch lately, you might have noticed the fully stocked shelves. We were the lucky recipient of a grant from Sacramento Public Library of 11,000 new books. The collection enhancement added new items to all adults and children's collections, particularly the most popular types: board books and easy readers for kids, graphic novels for kids and teens, and urban fiction and non-fiction for adults.  Here are before and after photos that should gladden the heart of every library patron!

Don’t miss the Backyard Composting class on Saturday, September 15 at 1:00 pm. Learn about backyard composting with the Master Gardner Compost Education Team. The 90-minute class will cover topics such as the value of compost, types of compost bins, the process of building a compost pile, and what to avoid. Presenters will also include a question and answer session at the end of the program.

And a few other programs of note:
  • For school age, there’s Uncle Jer’s Traveling Bee Show on Thursday, September 6 at 4:00 pm
  • Bilingual Storytime: Thursday, Sept. 20 at 4pm - New day and time! Families with young children are invited to our new bilingual preschool storytime on the third Thursday of each month. Antelope High School students will help our Librarian read one or more stories in Spanish and feature songs, crafts and activities in both Spanish and English. Free admission.
  • For teens, Friday game night is set for Friday, September 28 at 3:30 pm. Come play! Bring a friend and enjoy card games, wii, and board games at the library! Snacks will be provided.
  • For adults, check out a SMUD money saving program on Monday, October 8 at 5:30. Save money on your monthly bill! Join SMUD experts as they explain simple ways to save energy and money while keeping your home comfortable. This seminar will discuss energy efficient technologies, simple ways you can change your habits, and SMUD programs. All programs are listed on the saclibrary.org website, just link to North Highlands-Antelope on the locations tab.
Our Circulation Supervisor Nancy Swingle retired on June 22. This week her replacement started, his name is Shane Kent and he comes from the Belle Cooledge Library, where he had been working as a Library Assistant for 3 years. Before that, he was a supervisor for FedEx. And Library Assistant Hanna Smith will be leaving us for a promotion to Circulation Supervisor at Belle Cooledge Library. Her last day here is Sept. 14.

And finally, Sacramento Public Library will soon be sending out a new newsletter, History in the Making. Sacramento’s rich history, as displayed in the Sacramento Room, will be explored by library archivists. For those of you who saw James Scott’s presentation last year at Tea and History, you know how the stories from Sacramento’s past fascinated us. Don't miss an issue and subscribe now.

TEA AND TINSELTOWN A SMASH SUCCESS
If you were lucky enough to attend our August 4 fundraiser, Tea and Tinseltown, you got to hear fascinating stories of old Hollywood from an expert with unparalleled access to Twentieth Century Fox, from its early days to the present. Michael Troyan, author of the definitive history of that studio, spoke for about 45 minutes about the famous leading ladies and gentlemen of the silver screen.

Enjoying our tea

We had tasty treats, lots of prizes and a chance to hear from a Hollywood expert. It was a great event, and the Friends hope to repeat the success next year with a Mother’s Day tea! And of course, all proceeds remain in our branch to fund programs, materials and services for North Highlands-Antelope library patrons.
Michael Troyan kept our attention

NEW BAG SALE ADDED TO FALL BOOK SALE SCHEDULE
Because of the expanded hours in our branch, the fall book sle will now add a BAG SALE ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28, from noon to 3:00 pm. In addition to our normal sale on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27, you can bring your shopping bag or tote and fill it with any books remaining in the community room for $5. Yes, just $5 gets you a bag of books that you have always wanted to read!

We have large selection of children’s books, DVDs and audiobooks, in addition to our fiction and nonfiction hardback and paperback inventory. So mark your calendar for our fabulous fall book sale, Friday, October 26 - Sunday, October 28 and tell all your friends and neighbors.

Friends first quarter meeting

FRIENDS THIRD QUARTER MEETING SET

The North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library will hold their quarterly meeting on Wednesday, October 18 in the library community room at 11:00 am. We will review the library’s upcoming program and resource needs, finalize plans for our fall book sale, and set up a committee for the 2019 fundraiser tea.

Sandwiches will be provided, members are asked to bring a side dish, dessert or drink to share. For more information, contact Debby Karaman, debbykaraman@gmail.com or Nancy Matlin, nancy@quickpiano.com. If you have never attended a meeting, but are curious about what the Friends really do, this is a great opportunity to hear from Kristi about what’s in store at the branch, and meet the volunteers and Friends that make our community so special.

2018-19 BOOK FIRST LAUNCHES IN OCTOBER

After a very successful Big Day of Giving in May, the books are ordered for first graders across the county for the Book First program. Sorting parties have been set in four library locations in October. On Tuesday, October 23, volunteers will gather here to sort at 10:00 am. If you can't make the North Highlands-Antelope location, but would still like to help, there is also a sorting party on Friday, October 26 at the South Natomas library, also at 10:00 am.

We are also looking for volunteers to make school visits likely in the January through April time period 2019. This is a wonderful project that helps encourage childhood literacy and a life long love of books among students who often have never owned their own book. It is also a great way to satisfy your inner Grandma or Grandpa, since these first-graders are so darn cute and appreciative. For more information, contact Karen Lindh at karen.lindh@icloud.com.

Our third annual tea has been announced for Saturday, August 4 at 1:30 pm in the community room. This year, we will be highlighting old Hollywood, with author Michael Troyan, who has written about the golden era of Twentieth Century Fox, and other books focusing on the industry. SECOND QUARTER BOOK SALE BENEFITS THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY

Friends held their second book sale of the year May 4 and 5, and hundreds of books were sold at bargain prices. The Friends netted about $1,000, which will be used to fund library programs and the Lucky Day program. And since everything is less than $3.00, many people in the community can enjoy reading their own "new to them" book.

Our next book sale will be held the last weekend in October.

BIG DAY OF GIVING

Working with branch Friends’ groups, Friends of Sacramento Public Library (FSPL) raised $36,000 during the Big Day of Giving (BDoG) on May 3. BDoG is a 24 hour online giving challenge designed to demonstrate the generosity of the residents of the Sacramento Valley. Nearly 600 nonprofit organizations participated.

All proceeds raised during BDoG will go to fund SPL’s Book First program, which aspires to “Put a book to keep into hands of first-graders from high-need schools who may not have books in their homes.”

In 2018, SPL was able to distribute a free book to 11, 745 first grade students in 157 schools in the county, about 62% of the total first grade population.
Last week, the Board of FSPL voted to add additional funds to the Big Day of Giving total in order to donate $45,000, which will include many more schools and students for 2019.

BOOK FIRST A GREAT HIT IN OUR COMMUNITY

In 2018, 17 schools and nearly 1200 first graders in North Highlands-Antelope community benefited from SPL’s Book First program, receiving a free book. This was the largest At each eligible school, Denise Lee, Children’s librarian, or another member of staff was accompanied by a Friend to distribute books and interact with the students.

Schools, teachers, students, our library staff and the Friends love this program! And we received some lovely thank you messages. If you haven’t been involved to date, it’s not too late. We expect to have even more schools included in 2019. If you would like to be involved, you can email us at nhantelope.friends@gmail.com and we will add you to the list of volunteers for school visits. Most of the visits take place between January and March.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR NORTH-HIGHLANDS-ANTELOPE FRIENDS ANNUAL DINNER

The next Friends meeting will be held Wednesday, July 18 at 6:00 pm in the library’s community room. This is our annual “fiesta” with dinner from El Pollo Loco. We hope that you can join us! Kristi Powell will present the highlights of new speakers and programs that staff has lined up for the first quarter. Final details for “Tea and Tinseltown” will be nailed down, and after a review of the budget, Friends will authorize funds for the library.

This is the best meeting of the year, so join us!

BOOK FIRST PROGRAM AN ONGOING SUCCESS

In North Highlands andAntelope schools, Sacramento Public Library’s Book First program has been a great success, loved by students, teachers, SPL and Friends alike. Book First, which SPL administers and the Friends fund, will provide a “forever” book to nearly 12,000 first-graders in Sacramento County this year. Studies have shown that early literacy programs like this contribute to the goal of every child reading at grade level by the third grade.

Community Collaborative Charter
school in January

Our community is perhaps the greatest beneficiary of this program, with first graders in seventeen schools receiving a free book. The Friends have played an active part, working side by side with our librarians, Denise, Kristi and Megan, in all the schools that were eligible for Book First. Distribution of books has nearly concluded but if you are interested in making a classroom visit as part of next year’s program, let us know at NhAntelope.friends@gmail.com.

FRIENDS SPRING MEETING SET

Join the North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library for our spring meeting, Wednesday, April 18 at 11:00 am in the library’s Community Room. We will be discussing new programming proposed by Kristi Powell, Branch Supervisor, for the summer, our August tea fundraiser, Big Day of Giving, the spring book sale and a new membership contest adopted by Friends of Sacramento Public Library, which offers cash prizes to those branches recruiting the most new members by August 31. Top prize is $500, which could fund two months of Lucky Day books or two fun children’s programs that will captivate school age children. So, ask a friend, relative or neighbor to join the Friends of Sacramento Public Library.

BOOK SALE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our spring book sale will be held on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5.  We hope to recruit lots of teen and adult volunteers. As weekly lobby sales have declined, the quarterly book sales are even more important to meet our budget goals. Remember, everything we raise is used by the North Highlands-Antelope library to fund Lucky Day books and the exciting programs developed by library staff.

Book sales are a lot of fun, each volunteer gets a free book of their choice, and it’s a great way to help our community. More information will be made available as we get closer to the event. Contact us at nhantelope.friends@gmail.com  for more information or to select a shift to work during the sale.

BIG DAY OF GIVING MAY 3

The Friends of Sacramento Public Library will be one of 600 organizations covered under Sacramento’s Big Day of Giving on May 3, 2018. This is a 24 hour giving challenge that supports nonprofit organizations in our community.

The funds raised  by the Friends during this campaign will be dedicated to the Book First program. This year, donors can schedule their gifts between April 18 and May 3, donate on the Big Day of Giving, or send a check, if that is a preferred option.

More info will be forthcoming over the next 30 days, but mark your calendars!
