“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.”

HOLIDAY CHEER
We hope you have enjoyed the wonderful decorations around the library over the holiday season. Kudos to our Library Assistant Cindy for her creativity and keeping things festive for all our staff, Friends, and patrons! We get many compliments on the special bookish flair, which has also been frequently highlighted on the Sacramento Public Library’s social media accounts.

FRIENDS FIRST QUARTERLY MEETING OF 2018 SET
Join the North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library for our first meeting of the year, Wednesday, January 17 at 11:00 am in the library’s Community Room. We will be adopting a budget for 2018, electing new officers to serve this year, and discussing our goals and objectives for the year.
The last two years, we have held a successful tea. Discussion about whether to continue this event will be on the agenda.

One activity that the Friends will be repeating this year is Book First, which is managed by Sacramento Public Library and funded by the Friends. This year, first graders in seventeen schools will receive a free book thanks to Book First. Children’s librarian, Denise Lee, is arranging classroom visits now, so we will be looking for seven or eight volunteers to go with her to one or two of these visits. This is a small commitment of time, less than an hour, with an enormous payback, since this is one of the most rewarding volunteer activities I have been involved with as a Friend.
And we hope you will support us again during this year’s Big Day of Giving in May. Each year, we have raised more money, allowing us to visit more schools and give away more books to first graders. Let’s strive to make sure that each and every first grader in the city and county receives their free book!
Our first book sale of the year is coming up and we hope to recruit lots of teen and adult volunteers. As weekly lobby sales have declined, the quarterly book sales are even more important to meet our budget goals. Remember, everything we raise is used by the North Highlands-Antelope library to fund Lucky Day books and the exciting programs developed by library staff.
We will once again work to recruit teens to take the boxes out of the closet on Thursday afternoon for easy set up. We are hoping for a dozen volunteers on Friday morning, February 2 at 9:30 to arrange boxes or books on the tables. The first sales shift is noon to 3:00 pm and the second shift is 3:00 - 6:00 pm. Saturday’s sales shifts are 10:00 - 1:00 and 1:00 to close. If you only have one hour to donate, Saturday from 3:00 - 4:00 pm is the hour that all books are either re-shelved, boxed to go to The Book Den or stored in the closet till the next sale in May.
Book sales are a lot of fun, each volunteer gets a free book of their choice, and it’s a great way to help our community. Contact Karen Lindh at 916.591.7269 or karen.lindh@icloud.com for more information or to select a shift to work during the sale.
FRIENDS OF SACRAMENTO PUBLIC LIBRARY TO HOLD COMBINED ALL FRIENDS AND ANNUAL MEETING IN FEBRUARY
The Friends of Sacramento Public Library will hold the organization’s Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 11 at 1:00 pm at the Arden Dimick branch library. At this meeting, we will hear from Rivkah Sass about the library’s goals and objectives for 2018, get an update on Friends’ activities, including Book First and Big Day of Giving, and hold elections for the officers and Board to serve in 2018.
There will be time for branch sharing at the meeting. By combining the Annual Meeting with the winter All Friends meeting, we hope to be more effective and efficient.
While most of us participate in Friends to serve our local library, it is important to know that we are part of an organization that serves all 28 branch libraries! More information will be forthcoming about the Annual Meeting within the next week or so.
