Author Sam McManis - Former Sacramento Bee journalist Sam McManis spent five years on the road trying to find the real California. He discovered there is more than one California, and every different California is equally weird and wonderful. "Crossing California: A Cultures Topography of a State of Wonder & Weirdness" is a travel book about Sam’s experiences criss-crossing the state looking for interesting and unusual places and people. Worlds collide and commingle all brought together in a bouillabaisse of voices, "Crossing California" will make you see the state in an entirely new light. This presentation is free to attend, copies of McManis' books will be available for purchase. 2pm Wednesday, March 21.

Drawing with Art Pastels Workshop - Are you ready to achieve beautiful painting-like drawings with bold colors? Join us at the North Highlands-Antelope Library for a fun workshop for adults (4 classes, 2 hours every Wednesday in April) working with oil pastels! Students will discover a variety of new drawing techniques such as stippling, burnishing, hatching, directional lines, layering and color blending. We will also touch on tone, form and composition. Students are also exposed to the color wheel and color theory as we learn about primary, secondary, tertiary warm and cool colors.
At the end of each class we will have group discussion and evaluation of techniques as we review everyone’s work. This is a great opportunity for beginners or seasoned artists! IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

As always, our staff tries to keep the library looking sharp with displays and decorations. Recent highlights include the Valentine hearts on the wall, each with a favorite book listed by various patrons. There are also shelves stocked with ideas for the Library Bingo game, which will be on display through March. If you haven’t played yet you can still win a prize! And we’ve recently gotten fancy new upgrades in the Kid’s area: new slatwall to display books, media draws, and storytime carpets.

BOOK FIRST PROGRAM AN ONGOING SUCCESS

In North Highlands andAntelope schools, Sacramento Public Library’s Book First program has been a great success, loved by students, teachers, SPL and Friends alike. Book First, which SPL administers and the Friends fund, will provide a “forever” book to nearly 12,000 first-graders in Sacramento County this year. Studies have shown that early literacy programs like this contribute to the goal of every child reading at grade level by the third grade.

Our community is perhaps the greatest beneficiary of this program, with first graders in seventeen schools receiving a free book. The Friends have played an active part, working side by side with our librarians, Denise, Kristi and Megan, in all the schools that were eligible for Book First. Distribution of books has nearly concluded but if you are interested in making a classroom visit as part of next year’s program, let us know at NhAntelope.friends@gmail.com.

FRIENDS SPRING MEETING SET

Join the North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library for our spring meeting, Wednesday, April 18 at 11:00 am in the library’s Community Room. We will be discussing new programming proposed by Kristi Powell, Branch Supervisor, for the summer, our August tea fundraiser, Big Day of Giving, the spring book sale and a new membership contest adopted by Friends of Sacramento Public Library, which offers cash prizes to those branches recruiting the most new members by August 31. Top prize is $500, which could fund two months of Lucky Day books or two fun children’s programs that will captivate school age children. So, ask a friend, relative or neighbor to join the Friends of Sacramento Public Library.

BOOK SALE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our spring book sale will be held on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5.  We hope to recruit lots of teen and adult volunteers. As weekly lobby sales have declined, the quarterly book sales are even more important to meet our budget goals. Remember, everything we raise is used by the North Highlands-Antelope library to fund Lucky Day books and the exciting programs developed by library staff.

Book sales are a lot of fun, each volunteer gets a free book of their choice, and it’s a great way to help our community. More information will be made available as we get closer to the event. Contact us at nhantelope.friends@gmail.com  for more information or to select a shift to work during the sale.

BIG DAY OF GIVING MAY 3

The Friends of Sacramento Public Library will be one of 600 organizations covered under Sacramento’s Big Day of Giving on May 3, 2018. This is a 24 hour giving challenge that supports nonprofit organizations in our community.

The funds raised  by the Friends during this campaign will be dedicated to the Book First program. This year, donors can schedule their gifts between April 18 and May 3, donate on the Big Day of Giving, or send a check, if that is a preferred option.

More info will be forthcoming over the next 30 days, but mark your calendars!
