May-June 2018 NH-Antelope Friends Newsletter

NEWS FROM OUR BRANCH LIBRARY

Lots of fun, interesting and informative events coming up at our branch. Your kids, (or grandkids) won’t want to miss the Hula Hoop challenge on Thursday, May 17 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm. And on Thursday, June 7 at 4:00, they’ll also want to catch Nature’s Critters, with live reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals coming for a visit to the library. This program is sponsored by Friends of North Highlands-Antelope library. And don’t miss the Treasure Hunt kicking off the summer reading program on Friday, June 1 at 4:00 pm.

Lunch at the Library returns on June 12, running through August 3 from 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Open to all youth age 18 and under – no paperwork required.

For teens, the Chess Club meets every Saturday at 2:30, and on June 8, to kick off summer vacation, they can decorate their own T-shirt, with all supplies provided except the shirt.

For adults, there are three book clubs meeting each month: classics, mystery/thriller, and the adult book club, with popular fiction and nonfiction offerings.

There are lots of other activities, too, so be sure to check the library’s calendar for May and June, either in the branch or online.

TEA AND TINSELTOWN TICKETS  ON SALE NEXT WEEK

Our third annual tea has been announced for Saturday, August 4 at 1:30 pm in the community room. This year, we will be highlighting old Hollywood, with author Michael Troyan, who has written about the golden era of Twentieth Century Fox, and other books focusing on the industry. Enjoy tasty tidbits, wear your best Hollywood hat and prepare to be thoroughly entertained by tales of old and new Hollywood!

For more information or tickets, you can contact us at nhantelope.friends@gmail.com. We are always looking for a few good volunteers, too, so if you are a whiz in the kitchen, creative with a centerpiece, a good artist or marketer, send us an email and we would love to include you on our team!

SECOND QUARTER BOOK SALE BENEFITS THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY

Friends held their second book sale of the year May 4 and 5, and hundreds of books were sold at bargain prices. The Friends netted about $1,000, which will be used to fund library programs and the Lucky Day program. And since everything is less than $3.00, many people in the community can enjoy reading their own "new to them" book.

Our next book sale will be held the last weekend in October.

BIG DAY OF GIVING

Working with branch Friends’ groups, Friends of Sacramento Public Library (FSPL) raised $36,000 during the Big Day of Giving (BDoG) on May 3. BDoG is a 24 hour online giving challenge designed to demonstrate the generosity of the residents of the Sacramento Valley. Nearly 600 nonprofit organizations participated.

All proceeds raised during BDoG will go to fund SPL’s Book First program, which aspires to “Put a book to keep into hands of first-graders from high-need schools who may not have books in their homes.”

In 2018, SPL was able to distribute a free book to 11, 745 first grade students in 157 schools in the county, about 62% of the total first grade population.
Last week, the Board of FSPL voted to add additional funds to the Big Day of Giving total in order to donate $45,000, which will include many more schools and students for 2019.

BOOK FIRST A GREAT HIT IN OUR COMMUNITY

In 2018, 17 schools and nearly 1200 first graders in North Highlands-Antelope community benefited from SPL’s Book First program, receiving a free book. This was the largest At each eligible school, Denise Lee, Children’s librarian, or another member of staff was accompanied by a Friend to distribute books and interact with the students.

Schools, teachers, students, our library staff and the Friends love this program! And we received some lovely thank you messages. If you haven’t been involved to date, it’s not too late. We expect to have even more schools included in 2019. If you would like to be involved, you can email us at nhantelope.friends@gmail.com and we will add you to the list of volunteers for school visits. Most of the visits take place between January and March.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR NORTH-HIGHLANDS-ANTELOPE FRIENDS ANNUAL DINNER

The next Friends meeting will be held Wednesday, July 18 at 6:00 pm in the library’s community room. This is our annual “fiesta” with dinner from El Pollo Loco. We hope that you can join us! Kristi Powell will present the highlights of new speakers and programs that staff has lined up for the first quarter. Final details for “Tea and Tinseltown” will be nailed down, and after a review of the budget, Friends will authorize funds for the library.

This is the best meeting of the year, so join us!
