Book to Play presentation: "When We Were Colored" by Ginger Rutland
Monday, Feb. 25 @ 5:30pm
"When We Were Colored" is a book by Eva Rutland and tells the story of one family’s experience with integration in post-World War II Sacramento. When a black mother moves to California from the segregated south with her husband and children, the family must confront what it’s like to be the first black household on the block, the only black children at school and how to continue to love those with different ideologies. Ginger Rutland has written a play based on her mother’s book that will have its premiere at the Sacramento Theater Company on March 20. Join Ginger for a special reading and discussion of the book and the play.

You are invited!

1st QUARTERLY MEETING ON JANUARY 16, 2019

Join us as we meet for our first meeting of the year, to hear about upcoming library programs and events, and make funding decisions. We will discuss the progress of the Book First program, begin planning for our Mother’s Day Tea and elect new officers for 2019. The meeting will begin at 1:00 pm in the Community Room. Lunch is not being provided, but there may be treats. If you have never attended a meeting, this is a great time to start and you are most welcome.

BOOK FIRST

The North Highlands-Antelope library community is blessed to have free books for first-graders in eighteen local schools in 2019. Due to the success of the Big Day of Giving fundraiser last May, over 13,000 first-graders in Sacramento County will receive a free book. The Friends have partnered with Sacramento Public Library to distribute the books, so we are looking for volunteers to go with Denise Lee, our youth services librarian. This is an easy assignment, helping to lay out books for the students to select, and quick, generally less than one hour per appointment. If this project sounds good to your inner grandma or grandpa, contact Karen Lindh, karen.lindh@icloud.com. We have school visits scheduled on these dates:
