FRIENDS FUND SUMMER PROGRAMS
Students at Oak Hill Say Thanks! |
We also had a chance to look at some of the thank you letters that came in from first-graders in local schools, received since the Book First distribution in January-March.
Our next meeting is Wednesday, July 17 at 6:00 pm in the Library’s Community Room. This is a dinner meeting and we hope that all our working Friends will be able to join us!
NEW - POP UP BOOK SALE IN JUNE
Our shelves are full, so we are piloting a new “pop up” sale, which is a one day, mini-sale event. Stop by the library on June 19, from 10:00 - 6:00 pm. Stock up on kids books to encourage summer reading, audiobooks for your family road trips and don’t forget a couple of good beach reads for yourself. We will offer a nice sampling of fiction and nonfiction, including sci fi, from which to choose.
Mark you calendar right now for our summer book sale, August 9 - August 11. Back by popular demand on August 11, our Sunday bag sale, where you can choose from our huge selection to fill your bag for $5.
FRIENDS STORE IN LIBRARY FOYER STREAMLINED
The Friends Store |
And speaking of book sales, when you are visiting the library, check out the Friends' shelves in the foyer. We slightly revamped our "store" in hope that you will find it easier to find a great book to buy. We will stock fiction and nonfiction, and continue selling donated current magazines. We have simplified pricing, with hardbacks selling for $2.00 and paperbacks for $.50. We have adopted a “pay what you think is fair” pricing scheme for the children’s section. The idea is to make it easier to find a book, and to reduce the confusing number of prices to a simpler system.
And if you have gently used books to donate or relatively current magazines, drop them off at the library desk during business hours.
BIG DAY OF GIVING WILL BENEFIT LOCAL KIDS
Out of 601 organizations on the Giving Edge platform, the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library ranked #26 in terms of dollars raised. Between April 15 and May 2, about 500 individuals (there are some who donated more than once) made online donations totaling $45,837. (In 2018, about 430 donors contributed $36,000). In addition, $8,430 was donated offline to Book First/BDOG in cash and checks for a total of about $54,000. We also won three prizes during the event, adding $2,000 to the dollars donated for BDOG.
All funds raised during the Big Day of Giving are dedicated to the Sacramento Public LIbrary’s Book First program, which provides first-graders in underserved communities with their own “forever” book. This is a demonstrated technique to encourage reading and improve student literacy.
Kids at Martin Luther King, Jr choose a book |
The North Highlands-Antelope community is the largest beneficiary of this program. In 2018-2019, 1,200 first-graders in our schools received a free book, out of the 13,000 distributed county-wide. I hope you were generous on the Big Day of Giving. If you would like to participate in book distribution in books in your neighborhood, contact me (karen.lindh@icloud.com) for more information. This is one of the most worthwhile volunteer activities I have been involved with, and I can recommend this heartily to other volunteers as fun and beneficial.

MOTHER’S DAY TEA
The Mother’s Day Tea was arguably our best ever. With a sold-out crowd, yummy treats and an entertaining speaker, our 4th annual tea fundraiser proved to be a great success. Maryellen Burns kept the audience fascinated by tales of restaurants old and new that have been beloved by Sacramentans over the years.
We had so many guests with beautiful hats that it was hard to choose the best one, so see which ones you like in the photos.

FSPL NEWS YOU CAN USE
- The Friends’ new Foundation, called Friends Investing in Sacramento Public Library is gearing up to begin operations by the fall. The goal of this new organization is to provide an avenue for members of the community to leave a legacy for Sacramento Public Library or their local branch library, if that is their wish. Friends Investing in Sacramento Public Library will invest the money and assure that earnings from the account are allocated in the appropriate manner. Currently, there is no good way to leave money to SPL or a specific branch, so the new organization will fill that void.
- The next All Friends meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at the Belle Cooledge library, 5600 S Land Park Dr, Sacramento, CA 95822. The meeting is from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. This is a great way to share information among the branches and learn some new tips and tricks.
