NORTH HIGHLANDS-ANTELOPE FRIENDS SELECT OFFICERS FOR 2020
At its January meeting, Friends selected Charlyne Nichols as President, Karen Lindh - Vice President, Karen Sanders - Secretary, and Deb Karaman and Jerry Matlin as Co-Treasurers. In other action, Friends approved branch supervisor Kristi Powell’s request for $1860 for the first quarter for Lucky Day and programs, including Wild Things, Inc, free comic book day, Tie Dye T-Shirts, Wonderlab, adult yoga and mindfulness classes, to name a few.
A theme and guest speaker for the 5th Annual Friends’ tea were selected (see more below). The decision was made to reduce the duration of big book sales from three to two days, and to add a few additional pop-up sales to make up some of the revenue.
Thanks so much to outgoing President, Debby Karaman, who continues to contribute to the North Highlands-Antelope Friends community in many ways.
BOOK FIRST CONCLUDES FOR 2020
There were 20 schools in the North Highlands-Antelope community that participated in Book First, a program launched by Sacramento Public Library and funded by Friends to provide eligible first graders with a free book. At each school, Denise, accompanied by a Friend of the Library, provided a wide selection of books and first graders got to select their own “forever” free book. In addition to encouraging children’s literacy, the program also introduces the library, with all the wonderful programs and resources available for the whole family. Thanks to all our volunteers who participated: Deb Karaman, Karen Sanders, Hanne Robinson, Sigrid Willgohs, Carole Raine, Anne Ofsink, Karen Lindh, Charlyne Nichols, and Vicki Rondeau and Luana Kiger. This is a fun and worthwhile project, which the Friends intend to continue funding in 2021 through the Big Day of Giving on May 7.
BOOK SALE
Our first pop-up sale of 2020 is scheduled for March 5, weather permitting. The pop-up sales are one day sales, with fewer than 10 tables, held in front of the library under the portico. This is a good chance to check out bestsellers, audiobooks and DVDs. We will have a table of kids’ books, paperbacks and both fiction and nonfiction. Stop by and say hi.
5th ANNUAL TEA SET FOR SUNDAY, MAY 3
The Joy of Nature In Our Own Backyard is the theme for the Fifth Annual Tea fundraiser sponsored by the Friends. This event has sold out each of the first 4 years, and we are limited to 70 attendees in the Library’s Community Room. But our members always get first dibs, so you are invited to join us on Sunday, May 3, 2020 1:30 PM, 4235 Antelope Rd. Antelope, CA. Our speaker is local author Barbara Klide, who has written a true life saga of a pair of Canada geese and their offspring, that have made a Roseville business park their home during five months in each of the last three years.
The trilogy, Along Came Ryan...the Little Gosling King is a wonderfully heartwarming, educational true-life saga. At its core, this collection of books is a love story about a committed, protective, and elegant mated pair of Canada Geese, Hawkeye and Mother Goose which promotes appreciation and awareness of the natural world we share with these amazing creatures. It is packed with in depth sources of Canada Goose information and Interesting facts for further studying and enjoyment from the National Geographic, National Audubon Society, California Rice Commission, and many others.
Suggested donation is $20, and all proceeds benefit the North Highlands-Antelope Library. Tickets are now available online at: https://north-highlands-antelope-friends-of-sacramento-public-library.square.site/.
