OCTOBER 2020
FRIENDS OF NORTH HIGHLANDS-ANTELOPE LIBRARY
NEWS & UPDATES
If you have been missing the library, we have a fantastic volunteer opportunity available at the North Highlands-Antelope Library. The county will station a ballot drop box outside of the branch. Volunteers are needed for the task of ballot drop box monitoring. Ballot box watch shifts are for either 1 to 2 hours. Shifts will be available Tuesday – Saturday from 10am to 6pm, starting October 5th. If you are interested, you can contact Catherine Jackson (by email or phone – cjackson@saclibrary.org or 916-264-2920) so she can arrange trainings and place you on the schedule. Feel free to email her with any questions
Our branch will also be a voting center, and volunteers will be needed for “drive thru” ballot collection and traffic control. I encourage all the Friends to take a shift or two during this election cycle, which is a benefit to our community and to the nation!
Book First will be launching later this year. See the article below to see how you can be involved. This is one of the most satisfying volunteer opportunities available to us as the Friends.

BIG DAY OF GIVING/BOOK FIRST
Due to the pandemic, Book First will look a little different this school year. There will be two books, a work sheet and parent letter in a fun pack for first graders.
Sorting will be handled on a “work from home” basis. About 14,000 book packs will need to be assembled. Each volunteer will take materials home, prepare the packs and return the packs. Maybe we can have Zoom labeling parties.
Class visits will be virtual, and volunteers can join in. By the end of October, SPL will schedule Zoom meeting on book packs. In November, volunteers will assemble book pack. SPL will assemble book packs into classroom packs.
Vicki Rondeau, with the North Natomas Friends, is co-chair for this year. If you are interested in volunteering for this year’s book sorting or virtual school visits, contact her at: libraryland11@yahoo.com. Vicki also reported that last year’s students that got left out when the pandemic closed schools will be getting their books. This effort will encompass a couple of schools in the North Highlands-Antelope area. Vicki also noted that there is a need for a new co-chair for Book First. If you would like to be a leader in the Book First program, contact Vicki.
