SACRAMENTO PUBLIC LIBRARY UPDATE

  • The North Highlands-Antelope Library is now open for browsing! Even though the County has reverted to the purple COVID tier, SPL and the County Health Department have approved a reopening plan, with masks, limited attendance and social distancing. The branch is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm.
  • Curbside pickup by appointment is still available at North Highlands-Antelope and most other locations. Reserve your book online, get an email when the book is available. Drive over to the branch any time the library is open and text the number listed on the sign. When prompted, enter your library card number. A staff member will bring your book to the table in front.
  • Sacramento Public Library now offers computer appointments at six locations, including North Highlands-Antelope Library Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Patrons can schedule a one-hour computer appointments by calling Customer Service at (916) 264-2920 or (800) 209-4627.

Even during the pandemic, Sacramento Public Library continues to offer lots of online programming, from story time, to teen programs, and several adult book clubs. Check out saclibrary.org to get the complete list.

  • The Jane Austen Tea is back - and virtual! The event is scheduled for December 13, featuring Natalie Jenner, author of The Jane Austen Society. Register at sac library.org.
  • For other events, like book groups, story time, and online Zumba, check out the events calendar on the SPL website: https://saclibrary.evanced.info/signup/List.
  • SPL is hosting a monthly virtual meeting with the Sacramento County Veterans Officer as part of our services for the veteran population.

BIG DAY OF GIVING/BOOK FIRST

Due to the pandemic, Book First will look a little different this school year. There will be two books, a work sheet and parent letter in a fun pack for first graders. About 14,000 book packs will need to be assembled. Each volunteer will take materials home, prepare the packs and return the packs.

Instead of communal sorting parties, Friends volunteers will sign up to assemble the book bags in their homes, picking up the component pieces at either Carmichael, Central, Southgate or South Natomas Libraries and delivering the completed bags back to the same library. Volunteers will be using SignUpGenius to identify their library of choice and specify the number of bags they commit to assemble.  Materials will be available for pickup starting the week of November 16, and volunteers will use the online tool, SignUpGenius, to arrange time and place for pick up and delivering the book packs. An email with the link to SignUpGenius will be going out soon volunteers who have already signed up. As a thank-you gift, the volunteers will receive a Friends mask in the mail.

The classroom Zoom visits will then be scheduled from mid-December through March. Potential volunteers will contact their branch youth services librarians to schedule the visits.

Vicki Rondeau, with the North Natomas Friends, is co-chair for this year. If you are interested in volunteering for this year’s book sorting or virtual school visits, contact her at: libraryland11@yahoo.com.
