A Chance to Thank and Say Good Bye to Rivkah

Rivkah is often heard saying that she works with the greatest people so, of course, before she heads off to a well-deserved retirement, she will be visiting every single library in the system so she can personally thank staff for all they do.

Rivkah's Farewell Tour will commence in January. She will be coming to the North Highlands-Antelope Library on TUESDAY, JANUARY 11, 2022, from 1:00 to 1:30pm.

Chacha, North Highlands-Antelope Library supervisor, and the staff will present Rivkah with a picture book entitled Dear Librarian, signed by each staff member. Friends of the Library are invited to participate on the 11th. If you would like to sign the book to convey your thanks to Rivkah, please stop by the service desk during the library's open hours.

Rivkah has been a true friend and dedicated supporter of the Friends of Library. Please plan to convey your thanks and well wishes on January 11, 2022.

BOOK FIRST  -  YEAR SIX!!

Yes, it's year six for the Book First Program. This important early literacy program is funded by the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library with most donations coming each May on the annual Big Day of Giving.

STUDENT BOOK PACKETS  Book First provides two free books (one fiction and one nonfiction) to first graders in Sacramento's high need schools. This year there are 180 schools throughout Sacramento participating in the program with an estimated 14,000 first graders who will receive brand new books to keep.

Materials were ordered in October and Friends of the Library volunteers assembled book packets at the Central Library or at home. Each student packet includes a large blue envelope into which are placed two books, an activity sheet, a letter to parents and a ticket for another free book when they visit the library. Completed book packets will be distributed to the schools over the next couple months.

CLASS VISITS  Librarians at North Highlands-Antelope will start scheduling virtual class visits starting in January 2022. Covid restrictions are still in place so, just like last school year, the visits will be via Zoom.

If you haven't had the experience of participating in a class visit there will be lots of opportunities starting in January.  There's nothing quite so special as seeing the faces of the first graders when they open up the blue envelope and pull out the books-priceless!

Class visits last about 15 to 20 minutes and are done on Zoom so you can participate from home. The librarian orients the students to the materials in their packets and talks about the resources available at the library. You then have an opportunity to say a little about the Friends of the Library.

If you are interested in joining a class visit watch for future informational emails (via SignUpGenius) that will enable you to express your interest. Orientation and training will be provided for all Friends volunteers.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Katherine McMillan, at

 Message from Karen Wilson, System Friends President

Two weeks from today, Giving Tuesday, November 30, will be an opportunity to show our gratitude for the gift of reading, and to the libraries that make that gift accessible to everyone. This year the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library will be dedicating all funds raised on Giving Tuesday to the Young Readers Fund honoring our retiring Library Director, Rivkah Sass. As she has requested, this endowed fund will be used to provide programs and materials that nurture early readers.

Under Rivkah’s leadership, the Sacramento Public Library has become a national leader in making libraries accessible and engaging, safe and inspiring. In spite of the challenges posed by the pandemic, our libraries are adapting and providing vital public services. We all look forward to the days when kids and adults can fully use our neighborhood libraries again. The Young Readers Fund will be there to help future library staff provide innovative services that help build lifelong reading skills, and just the plain joy of reading.

A big Thank You to Capital Stage, and its Producing Artistic Director Michael Stevenson, for putting the importance of libraries into words, with videos you will be seeing on social media on behalf of the Young Readers Fund. They feature Capital Stage actors James Ellison, Devin Valdez, Elyse Sharp and Juan Chavez performing quotes from authors on what libraries have meant to them.

Click on the link below to take part in Giving Tuesday in any way you can, and thank you. For more information go to Saclibfriends.org

WHY I AM A FRIEND OF THE LIBRARY AND A LIBRARY VOLUNTEER

Helen Alexander is a second-generation Friend of the Library and Library Volunteer! Her Aunt Elizabeth in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, volunteered at her local library for 25 years!

Helen has been a Life Member of the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library since the late 1990's. She started volunteering at the Valley Hi-North Laguna Library about eight years ago. At that time, she volunteered several days a week with the library's ongoing indoor Book Sale. She enjoyed sorting, cleaning, pricing, and artfully arranging books on the shelves, up to ten hours each week.

After two moves, Helen landed in Antelope. She continued her Book Sale volunteer work with the Friends in early 2020. She volunteered at one outdoor book sale with other Friends. She had just done two weeks of indoor Book Sale work there...when the pandemic hit!  For a year, Helen had to stop her library work. She read hundreds of library books, instead.

Once the pandemic eased, Helen re-started volunteering, but now she helps by doing the weekly Pick List on Wednesdays. Helen finds books requested by patrons throughout Sacramento, and registers them, for a librarian to send out. She enjoys this work, and looks forward to it each week!

Helen says, "I enjoy discovering the new books patrons are reading, and finding exciting books on the shelves. I like to straighten up the shelves, and to keep the Russian and Ukrainian children's books in good order. The library staff has been so supportive, and helpful to me!"

MESSAGE FROM THE BRANCH FRIENDS PRESIDENT
CHARLYNE NICHOLS NHAntelopefriends@gmail.com

Dear Friends,

Covid still has our Friends’ activities on hold. Please, please, please, keep your membership current. Until we can again hold some books sales, our annual tea, etc., the membership dues are our only source of funding, monies benefiting not only our local branch of the library but also the North Highlands Antelope community – i.e., YOUR community!

This should probably go without saying…when you visit the library, you must wear a mask and observe social distancing. Only very young children are exempt from the mask requirement. BTW, if you forget your mask, you may pick one up in the lobby. They are free.

A reminder…Library hours are 10:00am to 6:00pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

Also worth mentioning…Several more computers are now available for your use—that is, at least a few more, if not the entire bank of them, than only the 2 or 3 we had to access fairly recently.

Volunteers are needed for the Book First program, a program that gives two new books to every first grader in the entire SPL area. If you have a few hours to donate please consider participating in book packet assembly and/or a virtual class visit that will be conducted via Zoom. Emails with signup information will be forthcoming. The Book First program is a very worthwhile and rewarding volunteer opportunity.

To find out more about the program and volunteer opportunities visit the Friends website at https://saclibfriends.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Year-6-Book-Pack-Assembling-eBlast-2.pdfhow

Storytime resumes! Yay!! The program will be taking place outdoors. What fun! Storytime is a program for our little tykes (infants to 6 years old) that includes songs, rhymes, and stories designed to build early literacy skills of young children.

Weather permitting, these fun-time events will start October 27th and will be held at Brock Park, 3730 Antelope Road, every Thursday at 10:30am. https://www.mapquest.com/us/california/brock-park-378564690

This program is for parents and caregivers with young children, older siblings all are welcome to attend.

Fall and winter mornings can be chilly, so take care to dress for the weather. Also note that the program may be cancelled due to inclement weather or poor air quality. Bring blankets or cushions to sit on. Spaces will be marked off allowing for social distancing.

MESSAGE FROM THE SYSTEM FRIENDS BRANCH LIAISON
KAREN LINDH  Karen.lindh@icloud.net
Rivkah Sass. As I am sure you know, Library Director Rivkah Sass will be retiring at the end of the year, after twelve years at the helm of the Sacramento Public Library. The search for a new Library Director has entered its final stages, with an announcement to come soon from the Library Joint Power Authority. The Friends have been a part of the selection process.

Young Readers Fund.  The Friends Board, along with our legacy giving arm, Friends Investing in Sacramento Public Library, has created a new fund to honor Rivkah Sass. We hope to raise public awareness of the Library as a vital community asset with the Young Readers Fund, providing funds into the future to nurture young readers. These are new initiatives for the Friends, and they build on the success we have had with the much-loved Book First program. We will be taking part in Giving Tuesday on November 30 on behalf of the Young Readers Fund. We also encourage our Branch Friends groups to consider a donation to support this exciting new endowment program.

Book First.
This amazing program is entering its 6th year! For the next book distribution to first graders, we will continue to provide two books to each student, one fiction and one nonfiction. Book First will serve an additional eight schools this year, for a total of 180 schools and an estimated 14,000 first grade students receiving Book First books! Thanks to the generosity of the entire Sacramento Community and all our Friends, in May we raised over $100,000 for this program, which is more than a four-fold increase since the initial Book First campaigns. Volunteers will again be needed this year to assemble book packets, either at home or in-person work parties at the Central Galleria. To find out how you can help, or to volunteer, sign up through our SignUpGenius form: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4EA8AC2FA6F8C25-book1.
Further instructions will be provided to all our volunteers.

The Book Den is now officially open. Official hours are 9-1pm on Wednesdays, Fridays, and non-warehouse sale Saturdays. You can shop the store and the warehouse with no appointment. Warehouse sales will continue by appointment only twice a month. In November, the Book Den will re-institute the monthly Members Only Friday night sales. This is a great perk to all our Friends members, so be sure to stop by during one of these Members Only sales. The first two will be November 5th and December 3rd from 5pm to 8pm.

Annual Meeting Friends meeting is set for Sunday, February 6, 2022 at 1:00 pm via Zoom. This is the meeting where you can vote for the officers and Board members taking office in 2022, so mark your calendars now. Upon the conclusion of the Annual Meeting, we will hold our regular All Friends, and I hope North Highlands-Antelope branch Friends will participate.

Among Friends. If you haven’t had a chance to review the FSPL Winter edition of Among Friends, you can check it out here: https://saclibfriends.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/2021-Winter-Newsletter.pdf?blm_aid=23826.

INTRODUCING CHLOE HORSMA, NORTH HIGHLANDS-ANTELOPE LIBRARY'S NEWEST LIBRARIAN

Chloe joined the team at the North Highlands-Antelope Library in April 2021. In addition to several years with the Sacramento Public Library, Chloe has an arts and creative writing background, is an avid knitter and craftsperson, and is the proud human companion of a one-year-old pug named Fig! So far at the North Highlands-Antelope Library, Chloe has worked on inviting teen volunteers back to the library, co-led the library’s Summer Meals program, and conducted virtual outreach to hundreds of 3rd – 8th graders in the Sacramento Public Library’s first Reading Ambassadors program. She is also a member of the Library Freedom Project, which trains librarians as privacy advocates in their communities. Chloe often reads several books at once, across genres, formats, and age ranges. She is currently reading a paper copy of I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness by Claire Vaye Watkins and the e-audiobook for YA title The Witch King by HE Edgmon. Among her most recent favorite picture books are Crocodiles Need Kisses, Too by Rebecca Colby and Alphonse, there's mud on the ceiling! by Daisy Hirst. Come see her at the library, or at an Outdoor Family Storytime near you!

Come see Chloe at the library, or at an Outdoor Family Storytime near you! Or join Chloe or another librarian to Zoom into a classroom full of excited young readers by signing up for a virtual Book First visit in the spring.

HALLOWEEN by Charlyne Nichols

Halloween has a long and interesting history dating back to ancient Celtic days, and has not always been associated with scary things or bags of candy! In fact, even in the early days in Europe and England, it had religious significance with special observations. If you are interested in exploring the history, mythologies, and superstitious about Halloween, check out the history of Halloween at History.com  https://www.history.com/topics/halloween/history-of-halloween

Read a scary story! So many great resources available at the library.

North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library update for July-August 2021

SAVE THE DATE!

You are invited to attend the ALL FRIENDS meeting on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at 1:00pm. The meeting will be held via ZOOM. Check the Friends website for ZOOM information and login https://saclibfriends.org/

MESSAGE FROM THE BRANCH FRIENDS PRESIDENT
CHARLYNE NICHOLS NHAntelopefriends@gmail.com

I greet you on behalf of the Friends of the North Highlands-Antelope library, to encourage you to renew your dedication and support to this very worthwhile group and, by extension, to the library itself and our community.

Without doubt the pandemic has affected everyone in some small or significant ways. Our library has been caught in the midst of it.

Since the library's Covid-mandated closure in March 2020, much has happened. After a relatively brief time, the library reopened on a limited basis, subject to numerous restrictions, many imposed by CAL-OSHA. In time, the library has returned to its pre-Covid days and hours of operation while continuing to require masks be worn by staff and patrons. While some restrictions have been relaxed, a "return to normal" is slow in coming.

It is not clear when we will be able to resume activities associated with book sales or other fund raising efforts like our author tea. In spite of the challenges, your commitment to the Friends is more vital now than ever before.

I encourage you to keep your membership current.

We will keep you informed as we know more about the changes at the library and ways in which the Friends will be able to more fully participate in fund raising and community outreach efforts.

You are the key to our continued success. I welcome your suggestions. Please feel free to email me anytime.

MESSAGE FROM THE SYSTEM FRIENDS BRANCH LIAISON
KAREN LINDH    Karen.lindh@icloud.net

While activities may be on hold at the branches, the Friends have had a busy spring and summer.

The Big Day of Giving was a smashing success. The Friends raised over $100,000 for the 2021-22 Book First Program. And now anyone can donate at any time of year! One member is holding a personal fundraiser for his 50th birthday, and new donations for Book First continue to come in each week. Here is the link if you would like to check it out: https://saclibfriends.org/book-first/book-first-form/.

Book Sales. One of the things that all the branches want to know is when can we return to book sorting and book selling. Sacramento Public Library is following workplace guidelines established by Cal-OSHA, which requires that social distancing continues for staff, eliminating the space needed for Friends activities. The rules have been evolving, so stay tuned for potential changes.

The Book Den warehouse is holding sales twice per month, by appointment only. The Book Den is also accepting donations, also by appointment only. For more info, contact Pam Whiteley at macsa46@gmail.com. The upcoming dates: September 11 and September 25.

Hope to see you at the library!

MESSAGE FROM THE BRANCH SUPERVISOR
VANESSA 'Chacha' CENTENO, MLIS

Civic engagement is at an increase with Vote at the Library, placing ballotdrop boxes at 26 library locations and establishing 5 libraries as in-person vote centers starting September 11th.

Summer Meals - Sacramento Public Library distributed 31,800 meals to youth 18 years of age and under. The Summer Meals program provided an opportunity for teens to return to in-person volunteer activities where they helped staff distribute books, activity kits, and 2,928 meals at the North Highlands – Antelope Library.

Summer Reading - Summer Reading results are in: 224,132 books read and 3,579 medals earned, including the 5,822 books read and 122 medals earned at the North Highlands – Antelope Library! Congratulations to all the Summer Reading participants! We are grateful for the support and advocacy the Friends of the Library give to the library and community. Thank you for helping us make a difference.

What are library staff reading? Library Supervisor Vanessa ‘Chacha’ Centeno is reading Sisters of the Neversea by American Indian Youth Literature Award winning author Cynthia Leitich Smith (Muscogee Creek Nation). Sisters of the Neversea is an Indigenous re-telling of Peter Pan and features cover art by Coretta Scott King Award winning artist, Floyd Cooper (1956-2021).

RIVKAH SASS is retiring at the end of the year as Library Director and CEO. In just 12 years, Rivkah has transformed the Sacramento Public Library from a dysfunctional organization under investigation by the Grand Jury to one of the nation’s finest. The reputation of

Sacramento Public Library has received national prominence under her leadership, and Rivkah herself was the 2020 winner of the Charles Robinson Award, a national award given to a public library director who has been a risk taker, an innovator or a change agent.

Under Rivkah’s leadership, the Friends’ have achieved a true partnership with the library, benefiting the Friends, each of the branches and our entire Sacramento community.

To honor Rivkah, the Friends and our foundation, Friends Investing in Sacramento Public Library, have created a new endowment, called the “Young Reader Fund.” Friends and FISPL will be raising $100,000 for the endowment, with the first $50,000 donated by the Friends of Sacramento Public Library. The Friend’s Board has provided $30,000 in seed money, with an additional $20,000 to be used for matching grants. This gets us to the halfway mark! The campaign kicks off in September and continues until 2022.

The purpose of the Fund is to:

  • Help fuel young readers potential through new initiatives;
  • Expand access to books for all young readers;
  • Bring an array of new experiences to inspire young people;
  • Provide SPL with resources to adapt to changing conditions in order to continue to support young people.

Branch Friends have many ways to contribute:

  • Share information about the Young Readers Fund with prominent members of your own community-this can potentially open doors for the FSPL fundraising team;
  • Volunteer to work on a task force or working group currently being developed in support of the Young Readers Fund;
  • Make a Branch Friends contribution to the Young Readers fund to leverage matching funds;
  • Support the Fund with your own donation;
  • Stand ready to assist the Friends Board and SPL with the implementation of new initiatives that the Fund will stimulate, just as the Friends do with Book First.
WHY I VOLUNTEER

My name is Stephanie Lamphere and I have been volunteering at the North Highlands-Antelope Library since December 2019. There are many reasons why I volunteer!

First, I care about the well-being of everyone in our society, and I believe that a society can't really function when people only consider themselves, so I try to do things that are helpful to other people.

Second, reading and information literacy are crucial skills today, and libraries are a key provider of these skills and resources.

Third, I strongly believe that people are happier when they can follow their curiosity and learn whatever they want to learn, and libraries are the perfect place to do this.

Lastly, I have always loved reading and exploring new topics, and think that everyone should have the opportunity to do those things. And besides all of these, I enjoy organizing things, which means that I really do enjoy my volunteer work!

The most meaningful experiences in my life involve reading and/or travel. The common thread is exploring new ideas, places, and cultures. My mother used to buy books by the bagful at by local library sales usually run by various friends of the library organizations, so that I would not run out of interesting reading material! As a child, I read anything and everything that struck my interest, and I still do this today. I will also travel anywhere that is mostly safe, and have visited places like Cuba, Singapore, most of Europe and the Soviet Union.

To me, reading and travel are very much connected, and I hope that my volunteer work helps in some small way for our patrons to create their own meaningful and interesting explorations.

North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library News for May-June 2021

THE NORTH HIGHLANDS-ANTELOPE LIBRARY IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Have you stopped by the library lately? We are open for browsing and computer appointments, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 am - 6 pm.

And after a pretty chaotic time due to the COVID-19 epidemic and staff turnover, our branch is welcoming a new leader - Vanessa ‘Chacha’ Centeno. She is best known for her work with immigrant and refugee families, advocacy for at-risk youth and diversity representation in libraries. Before her career as a librarian, Vanessa worked with chronic homeless populations and interned with her local Juvenile Probation Department while completing a Baccalaureate Degree in criminology & criminal justice. She has brought services to at-risk communities through partnerships with groups serving youth in special education, and by advocating for change in policy and service to foster and group home youth. Vanessa was raised amongst family with diverse Chicano and American Indian backgrounds and credits her grandmothers for teaching resilience and nurturing her love for younger generations. She enjoys storytelling and believes it teaches and preserves culture while healing the wounds of generational trauma. She is an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

BE A PART OF THE NORTH HIGHLANDS-ANTELOPE FRIENDS

Our membership has lagged during the past year, and if you haven’t renewed your membership, take a moment to do it again.

It is time to begin planning a return of our normal volunteer activities, everything from book sales to the tea that we had to postpone in 2020. And maybe a giant welcome home party as we all begin to return to our new normal post-pandemic. We need you more than ever!

BIG DAY OF GIVING A HUGE SUCCESS

The Friends of the Sacramento Public Library, in conjunction with SPL, saw an outpouring of community support on May 6, the Big Day of Giving. With the help of several matching grants, about $103,000 was raised for next year’s Book First program. Out of 688 nonprofits participating from all over the Sacramento Region, the Friends were number 27 on the leaderboard, which is a pretty spectacular result for an all-volunteer organization.

The need is greater than ever, especially due to the impact of distance learning for nearly an entire school year. Book First can help spark a love of books and love of reading among first graders in high need schools. We expect to provide over 13,000 first grade students at least one free book, and maybe some additional reading support during the school year.

In our community, many schools are eligible for Book First, and our first graders have benefited greatly over the years.

If you donated on the Big Day of Giving, thank you! And if you are interested in volunteering to join with our Youth Services Librarian, Denise Lee, on a virtual Book First visit, that is extremely valuable to our Book First team. Contact Katherine McMillan for more information, k_mcmillan@comcast.net.

BOOK FIRST VISITS

As a new member of the North Highlands-Antelope Friends, I am honored to be a part of an organization that supports the library and literacy.

Over the last several weeks, I have had the great pleasure of joining Denise, our Youth Services Librarian, as she visits first grade classrooms throughout the community.

Our visits are via Zoom. It’s a delight to see the mosaic of smiling faces on the computer monitor as we enter the virtual classroom. It’s amazing to see the expression on the children’s faces as they learn about their new books and the wonderful resources that are available at the library.

Scheduling the virtual meetings, maintaining ongoing communication with the teachers and ensuring the Book First packets are delivered and received by the teachers is a significant commitment and just one of the many activities Denise manages each day at the library.

The virtual visits have reached at least ten different schools, numerous first grade classrooms and several hundred students and dedicated teachers. The visits will continue through the end of May and resume sometime in the fall at which time we are hopeful that we’ll be able to resume the in-person visits where we’ll be able to bring the books directly into the classroom.

As a result of the success of the Big Day of Giving and the Friends of the Library, first graders received two books this year, one fiction and one nonfiction.

North Highlands-Antelope Friends of the Library March-April 2021

 BRANCH UPDATE

The North Highlands-Antelope library successfully reopened for browsing on February 9th. Our first day open we had over 90 visitors come and see us. Most of the other Sacramento Library locations also reopened the same day. Our patrons are extremely happy to be able to browse our collection and come inside the library again. All patrons are allowed 1 hour to use the library per day and can browse, use computers, sit down and read for a while, or check out new materials. Our new and lucky day books have been flying off the shelves.

In other news, our Children’s librarian, Denise, has been busy putting together numerous Book First orders and getting them delivered to schools around the community. She will also be scheduling virtual class visits with teachers who have requested them. Our teen librarian Meghan celebrated her last day with us here at North Highlands-Antelope on February 11th. She can be found working with the community at the North Natomas Library. We will greatly miss her and the impact she made on our teen community which our friends continuously supported with volunteer opportunities and resources for teen programs.

The Sacramento Public Library as a whole continues to provide virtual programs like book clubs, storytimes, English conversation groups, homework zone, and more. The Sacramento Public Library aims to remain a relevant and valuable resource for our communities especially during times when things are not the way they used to be. As always, the Friends’ support during this time is highly appreciated and we hope to continue providing more services into the future.
